(4,243 posts)I love that fresh feeling when you leave and the next week or two after. If I was a millionaire I would have a dental hygienist on retainer!

(56,912 posts)I don't love the dentist but, I don't hate it either.
maybe I should have checked: meh. whatever.
After it is all over though, I feel good knowing that I have done something positive for my overall health.
So, it is better than meh, whatever ... but, it is after all is said and done.
It hurts more when I check out and pay the bill than anything that happens in the chair.

(758 posts)Until I was in my 30's, and I finally found a dentist who knew how to make me comfortable. Suddenly I found going to the dentist tolerable. Now, after a succession of outstanding dentists (changed only because of moving) I actually look forward to seeing my dentist. He's a great guy, pleasant, careful and accommodating.
I have a rule for all medical/dental providers... if I'm not 100% satisfied, there are always others who will do better!

(72,790 posts)is a friend of mine. I don't mind it. I don't really love the procedures because I hate staying still for that amount of time but I like how my teeth feel afterwards.

(36,827 posts)When I was in my 20's I worked with a lot of guys who were twice my age and older. One of them mentioned how he was having to go see a periodontist to have his gums cut, rolled back, and his teeth cleaned underneath to clear out years of build up and decay. Most of my other co-workers of that age spoke up and relayed stories about having the same procedure done along with other frighteningly painful procedures like extractions, bridges, and dentures.
I made up my mind that day that I wasn't going to be in that boat when I got to that age. I brush and floss daily. I go see a dentist every six months for a cleaning. Now I'm at the age that those people whom I once listened are. I still have all my teeth and I've never had to pay for expensive repairs or go through painful procedures.
That's how I feel about dentist visits.

(5,167 posts)I called the dentist's office and they can get me in tomorrow afternoon.
This is just part of life and I'm grateful there are still enough teeth in my mouth to chew most foods and allow me live a fairly normal life in that respect.
I reflect that my mother, a beautiful woman, had her remaining teeth removed and replaced with dentures at age 69, when she was preparing to remarry after my father's death.
I'm past that age now and have no thought of relinquishing my remaining teeth. Fluoride didn't come into common use until I was an adult, so some damage had already been done to my teeth by that time, but I believe fluoride availability has helped me and family retain our teeth.

(6,154 posts)I used to have a dental plan and had my visits every 6 months pretty much covered 100%. But not that I don't have a job I have to pay. The cleaning I just got done that included an Xray, checkup, and cleaning (scaling and polishing) cost about $175.00.

(24,146 posts)i only pay if they have to do work....that reminds me, i owe them money....
we have a low cost dental clinic and the community college has a dental hygiene program and they do cleanings for free. when i was uninsured, i just didn't go to the dentist, but i have damn good teeth.

(38,337 posts)Drug me so I can close my eyes and sleep, or I can visit another world while the work is done. Tame the monster with benzodiazepines, nitrous, music...
Me, in my resisting torture mode, is a documented danger to self and others. I'd feel really bad if a dentist or dental assistant lost a finger.
I never want to be my crazy grandma who once bit a chunk of flesh out of a paramedic.
Teeth cleaning I can do, even scraping under the gums. Beyond that dental work is problematic and I always give fair warning that I'm a bad patient.

(50,567 posts)Dentists sure as hell have; after Realtors and services for seniors, dentists are our biggest advertisers across all our papers. They all do sedation dentistry (which comes in two varieties, oral which is a Valium before the procedure and IV which is prob. the same shit through a hose into your arm. And they all run "afraid of the dentist?" ads.
Notice this stuff really took off when Bush trashed the economy. The dentists, being geniuses, just couldn't figure out why no one's seeking dental care.
Most people are more afraid of what it's going to cost than what it will feel like; if people were truly afraid of pain there wouldn't be so many tattoo shops.

(1,044 posts)I'm absolutely terrified of dentists.
It's more than valium. He uses Triazolam. You take it an hour before the appointment, somebody drives you there. Apparently you can walk and talk, and do what's requested. Somebody drives you home. Shortly thereafter, you become aware again. It's pretty awesome if you need serious work done.

(41,999 posts)I've had him for more than 20 years. He's a little sensitive (I have to reassure him if anything hurts) but I'm in pretty good shape.

(24,146 posts)i've been seeing him for more than half my life and i really like him. i'm pretty meh about going to the dentist since i only go in for check ups and never really have any issues with my teeth.
it's the waiting time that kills me, he is always effing overbooked.

(10,893 posts)see a trip to the dentist as a time to really keep my teeth thoroughly cleaned, and they give me a free toothbrush every visit. I was due to go again last month, but got uninsured once my Mom lost her job early this year.

(12,296 posts)He's Puerto Rican ... has a great accent, beautiful eyes, perfect smile (of course), and unlike every other dentist I've seen since I was 6, he doesn't make my teeth bleed.
