The DU Lounge

The CBC did a LONG interview with her recently. It's over an hour and a half long. At times, the interviewer is annoying. At times, Joni is annoying. It's worth watching if you can clear the time in your busy schedule.

(10,000 posts)I know this is Teh Lounge and we're not supposed to get too political...and I know it's bad form to respond to myself reather than those who responded to me, but I want to address this to everyone in the thread.
We all know what has been going on in Texas and Wisconsin. I won't delve into that too much. I will, however, say that at about 30:45 into the interview, the interviewer asks Joni about how she transitioned from art school to playing music, and Joni talks about her unplanned pregnancy, how it impacted her life, giving up her daughter, and how unwed motherhood was back-in-the-day.
Sometimes, I feel that the arguments we're having in places like Texas and Wisconsin are partly caused by the fact that the living memory of life before 1970 is being lost. If you are under 30, for example, the concept of being pregnant and leaving town to protect the reputation of your parents (something Joni talks about in the interview) is almost completely foreign.
Anyway, that's a powerful part of the interview, and if you listen to nothing else, listen to that segment.

(46,436 posts)Now a little secret about Blue_in_AK, 19, unwed and pregnant in 1966, who also went away to the Methodist Home in San Antonio to give birth and give baby boy up for adoption, being forced to sign paperwork stating that father was unknown (which wasn't true) and that the child was unwanted and being abandoned. The secret kept from even my brothers, who thought I was spending the summer with grandparents. The shame and guilt and the not wanting to let the neighbors know.
To my parents' credit, when I told them the news, they asked if I loved the boy (whose parents wanted him to "do the right thing" and when I said no, they responded that obviously I couldn't marry him. But there was ONLY ONE OPTION since I wasn't ready to be a mother halfway through my college education.
A friend of mine had a back-alley abortion of twins at roughly the same time which was extremely hard on her and influenced my decision to go through with the adoption, but I will never forget that demeaning paperwork that I was forced to sign.
