And how do they get "lock" correct but key wrong? Maybe it's an electronic card and there's no good translation.
You'd think these days there'd be better translation skills around the world.

(2,682 posts)a person I knew offered me a short-term job of doing English-to-English translation. The material had been translated from Japanese traditional children's stories. The original translation into English was nearly as bad as this sign. After I cleaned it up and gave it back, I also had to tell the person that in American culture, children's stories containing the amount of violence in those stories would never sell and probably couldn't even get published.
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)Certainly not the really classic ones like Momo Taro, Tsuru no Ongaeshi, and Urashima Taro. On the other hand, Grimm's Fairy Tales are loaded with violence.
HeiressofBickworth
(2,682 posts)and I agree, Grimm's is also loaded, but the stories I worked on were even more so. It's been about 25 years ago but I remember something about a sword cutting off someone's (head? arm? leg?) don't remember the specifics any more. And there was more. I was mother to a teenager at the time and I recall that it made me uncomfortable to think that even younger children would be the target market.
When my kid was much younger, I read Grimm's to her, but they had been softened up quite a bit for publications for children. Disney made quite a career of softening stories for children.
I had offered to re-work the stories to make them more palatable but the person said that it was more important to keep them in their original format. I never did know what was done with them after that.
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)I would certainly be interested in reading the Japanese originals.
I had a couple volumes of "otogi banashi" (Japanese folk tales for children) at one time, and I can't remember any of the stories being very violent.
