Have you or a loved one ever had food poisoning?...

Some time around 1995 me and my family travelled back to China for a vacation to revisit the some of the places we had lived in in the 80s. Actually it was 1/2 a business trip as my father was there representing his college, they were trying to set up ties between his college and one in China in order to set up a student transfer program. Anyway one night the college treated us to dinner at a nice new seafood restaurant, run by Taiwanese. Pro tip it's rarely the place you THINK is going to make you sick that ends up doing so. We lived in China during the mid 80s when food sanitation was even worse than in the 90s and way worse than today, and today it's not exactly good in a lot of places. But despite eating out all the time, including lots of street food, we never so much as got a little sick. Same thing goes for Malaysia and other places we lived in. But this time was different. Luckily for me and my mother we weren't at the restaurant, but my father was. From his account he believes it was the clam soup that did it. He even remembers it being not very hot. Next day the vomiting began, and didn't stop for days! Quite a few people at the table fell ill and the symptoms were basically liquid gushing from both ends non stop. I'm talking the kind of thing where you visit the toilet and don't know which end to aim at the bowl We can laugh at it now but it wasn't funny back then.

At one point he had lost so much liquid, and had such a high fever, that he was delirious and we were worried for his life. The people from the local university who had treated us to the meal were of course mortified at what had happened, but they also urged us NOT to go to the hospital. Even by the mid 90s China's hospitals were still notorious places, the locals knew to stay away from them if they could. Clean needles, and supplies were a foreign concept, the reason is they just couldn't afford them. China back then was much more a 3rd world country than today. At first we listened to them but eventually my fathers condition had deteriorated to the point where we really felt we had no other choice, and another local friend urged us to do the opposite and go!

The hospital really was something rather primitive. Rooms consisted of a thin rickety cot and even ricketier side tables. Otherwise the rooms were bare. The whole hospital reeked of strong antiseptic cleaner, which was actually probably a good thing but it felt like being inside a bottle of formaldehyde! My father vaguely remembers a nurse coming in and stabbing his finger with a rather rusty looking implement and inserting an IV fluid line. There he stayed for the next 48 hours or so. Amazingly the next day he had made a 180, he was up and talking and lucid again. The IV fluids had done miracles for him. They also had a tray of warm canned sprite that he was religiously drinking from. Within another day he was almost completely back to normal. Needless to say the incident left a mark on us though as at the worst we weren't 100% sure he would survive. Looking back on it now he probably would have but it's still a scary position to be in when in a foreign country. Like I was saying above it's rarely the place that you think will make you sick that ends up doing so. In fact some of the safest food overseas may look the dirtiest. Street food for example is usually fine, though it may give you the "runs". Stay away from seafood unless you are visiting a place where ALL the locals seem to frequent. Actually fish, shrimp and the like are usually ok, but be VERY careful of shellfish!! And follow your instincts, if the place doesn't have any locals there don't eat there! Aside from these simple rules I'm not all that careful when I eat overseas, including all over Asia.

many times here as a caution to understand our food supply... my husband died from complications of food poisoning... he got sick suddenly (headache, nausea, dizziness, etc.) 2nd hospital finally figured it as spinal meningitis... by the time we got him to the third hospital (Dartmouth) he was unconscious and put on life support... long story but finally the doctors determined it was the foodborne bacteria Listeria... he ultimately died from resulting complications...

needless to say I get pretty passionate about Republicans wanting to deregulate everything...

Indeed our food industry here in North America is dangerously messed up. In fact there are aspects of our industry here that are more dangerous that seemingly dangerous practices overseas. The huge factory floor slaughter houses, and the immense amount of mechanization, combine this with a lack of oversight and you have a recipe for disaster.

When you cook it yourself you can usually be pretty confident you have got it well done enough. When you eat out it's one of those things.

One of the worst forms you can get, and yes it can cause permanent damage. Or did you never find out the exact pathogen? Do you know what food caused it?

we brought him to emergency and the doctors did their magic ( circa 1968 ) the bacteria that was the culprit only effected one of us.
I have seen a lot of sickness but food poisoning is very serious.

Unable to keep the slightest bit of even water down -- both ends gushing... sometimes
simultaneously. I literally lived on the bathroom floor. Got very worried on Day 2 and
called a friend to tell her that if she didn't hear from me on the next day, to have the
police knock down my door (I lived alone).

and I swear it from whatever dip was for the veggies. I took a bite and it's like I IMMEDIATELY knew something very, very bad was going to happen. Walked around the party trying to find my husband so we could leave, ran into a VP, he wanted to introduce me to his wife, I'm getting sicker and sicker...I'm trying to politely decline the meeting of the wife... he is being adamant, I was pretty new to the company. She finally walks over and I projectile vomited all over her shoes. Thought for sure I was going to lose that job. Luckily, because I was SO sick, we went straight to the urgent care center. My husband called the VP and explained that I had food poisoning and recommended he get them to remove that dip ASAP. I had the projectile vomit for about 36 hours, and then it stopped. Felt back to normal after a few days.

Last year, and I'm not sure how it happened, but I got violently sick like what was described above. When I could finally get to the doctor, and they did tests, it was e-coli. Had to take a bunch of meds for that. This one was the worst...it lasted much longer and I just felt horrid for days.

Sadly we couldn't abandon our clothes because my parents had no money. We had to wash our clothes by hand... in the ocean.

God save the next people who ate contaminated sea food, but the germs were probably endemic and the locals resistant to them.

We all have our own gut flora and it also varies geographically. The local people quite often are immune to many of the bacterial strains that will make you as a tourist sick. Though the worst ones like Ecoli and such will make just about anyone sick.

I woke up in the middle of the night and immediately vomited all over my bedsheets. Right after that I had severe diarrhea, which repeated itself multiple times throughout the night. Though by the next day I was mostly fine.

Any time I've gotten food poisoning, that I remember, I've been better or mostly better by the next day. Must be my cast-iron immune system (and stomach).

My parents were visiting from overseas..

My mother went into my pantry to cook my favorite meal...corned beef and rice - I only had corned beef in a tin - so she used that...

she flavors it, cooks with onions and a dash of this and that...and presto, it's delicious... I had two large helpings, my father is not a meat eater,so she prepared fish for him and she also had a small bite of that and the corned beef..

It's the middle of summer,DC is hot and humid at its finest...but instead I am curled up in a fetal position, shivering,cold wrapped up in a blanket..and I look grey..nothing is staying down, I end up at the Hospital...

To this day,even if I look at corned beef, I get a gag reflex...I was the only one that got sick that night, so I joke in the family that about the night my mum tried to whack me (in reality, the expiration date on the can was over 4 years old)

To this day,I have not been able to go near corned beef, even just smelling it make me want to heave...

Good think it's just a funny joke by now. Interesting that there was nothing off about the flavour, though I suppose with all that flavouring it might have been off and you couldn't tell.

Now when she visits the first thing she does is go through my pantry and throw out things..

We were playing in a hockey tournament at a small town rink and I hadn't eaten much all day so I bought a quick burger before leaving ... a half hour later I thought I was dying. I think that's the worst I've ever felt in my life. Reeeaaaallly painful and sick, sick for days.

This happened 20-odd years ago.

We had been staying in a rented cottage a few miles outside the Disney complex, and decided to stop at some restaurant for breakfast before heading into Disney World.

It was a really hot day, and to make matters worse, the air conditioning failed in the entire area where the rides are.

Halfway through the day, I started feeling wobbly, and thought it was the heat. Eating lunch didn't help. Finally I asked my husband if we could leave a little early because of the heat and my increasingly upset stomach.

We started heading out and I was desperately looking for a restroom, when our progress was blocked by one of those stupid parades with Mickey and everybody else. There were a lot of people blocking our way too. I ended up helplessly whoopsing up my lunch into a meticulously groomed flowerbed. At that point my husband and kids still seemed fine.

We made it to the car and headed to Clearwater, where we had planned to spend a couple of days at the beach. I was sick the entire way, quietly throwing up into large plastic bags and hurling them out the window. Never littered before or since.

By the time we got to the beach cottage, all four of us were feeling sick. The girls started projectile vomiting. We all took turns in the one bathroom, everyone screaming to hurry up and let the next one in. Finally, around 3 am, we lay atop the beds, all puked out. I'd never been sicker in my life, and I was worried about the kids, who were 5 and 2.

Then we heard something on a police radio - it turned out that there was a small police substation next to the cottage, and our windows were open. The news was that a small tornado was coming, headed directly our way. Voices on the police radio said the twister was ripping up cars and roofs down the street from where we were saying.

We were so wiped out we couldn't move. We lay there and waited for death.

The tornado, however, changed direction, and we were spared.

The next day we went to a local hospital, but they said there was nothing they could do for us. I'm pretty sure the scrambled eggs in the breakfast buffet were the source of the food poisoning, since we all had some.

Both of us had to be hospitalized for several days because we lost so much fluid from vomiting and diarrhea.

As many as a quarter of Americans suffer a food-borne illness each year - though only a fraction of those cases get linked to high-profile outbreaks like the recent salmonella-peanut scare, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Outbreaks are dramatic instances," says Dr. Robert Tauxe, a CDC expert on the subject. But they highlight a health threat that many people exaggerate and misunderstand, according to some experts.

Scientists have counted more than 250 food-related types of illness - from viruses to bacteria to parasites. Most common are Norwalk-like viruses - famous for sickening cruise-ship passengers. They account for about two-thirds of known food-poisoning cases, according to the CDC.

Two types of bacteria, campylobacter and salmonella, are the next most common. Campylobacter is blamed for about 14 percent of food poisonings, salmonella for roughly 10 percent.

It was horribly hot out, and we had been running errands all day. We stopped at a local Taco Bell, which we'd often eaten at before.

We bought some food and ate it, everything seemed fine. My husband was still hungry, so he went back in for another Burrito Supreme. He came back with it, and asked me if I wanted a bite. I said sure, took a bite, and promptly spit it out. I told him I thought the sour cream was spoiled, and suggested that he go back in and exchange it. He didn't want to spend the time doing that. I then suggested that he should throw the burrito out. He ignored me, and ate it anyway.

He wound up very sick...couldn't keep even water down for several days. I was seeing a naturopathic doctor at the time. At my next visit, my husband asked me to ask the doctor what he should do.

The doc said that my husband should mash up half of a banana, and mix it with plain, unsweetened yogurt, and eat nothing but that until the cramping and other unpleasant symptoms had subsided. It took 2 full weeks before my husband's stomach was healed enough to eat other food.

One time the fridge in the kitchen at the house where I lived spontaneously died on us, and I didn't fully realize it at first. So I cooked some steak that looked pretty dubious, more brown than red, and with the first couple bites I knew I had to throw out the rest. God knows what would've happened if I hadn't stopped then.

It happened here in Korea where I live. The funny thing is it wasn't just any restaurant, it was an American food chain (I will only say sandwiches and you can guess which one). I worked at a school about two blocks from the restaurant, had a hectic schedule and was living on my own at the time. Sometimes I'd eat that twice a day. One day I got violently ill and had to go to a clinic. Fortunately it wasn't bad enough I had to go to the hospital, but I was very uncomfortable for about four days.

It was not as bad as the pneumonia and the broken ankle I had two years ago or mono in my second year of college, but I honestly hope I never have to go through that again.
