(2,142 posts)"Recent estimates of global nesting populations are that 26,000 to 43,000 females nest annually, which is a dramatic decline from the 115,000 estimated in 1980.[28] These declining numbers have energized efforts to rebuild the species, which currently is critically endangered."

The photo doesn't say what kind of turtles these are, but to my untrained eye they appear to be Leatherbacks. We have done enough damage to the ecosystems and climate of this planet, that I have no issue with any attempts to make up for it in any way. In general, we are doing far too little.

(25,771 posts)thousands of years. (I use quotations so this doesn't get muddied up as "intelligent design" Humans have pretty much screwed this natural order all to hell and back in only the last couple of hundred. Destruction of coral reefs, pollution, long line and net fishing, etc. etc. ad nauseam. Turtles are subject to all kinds of stresses that this natural "design" doesn't account for.

(6,154 posts)Sounds like you are saying that we shouldn't help them. Or do you mean most will die anyway. Either way it's not very clear the way you worded that.

(12,389 posts)(considering that we've created so many roadblocks) is totally appropriate. Their greatest challenge will be once they hit the water, where they will be the main course on the menu.

(6,154 posts)There is a big green sea turtle population there and I got to swim with them which is always amazing. However it wasn't hatching season so I didn't get to see this amazing event.

(1,965 posts)I used live in Jensen Beach FL. If you walked on the beach at night, you could feel them scurrying over your feet! You had to be really careful not to step on them.
It's amazing how even at night regardless of which way they're facing when they hatch, they immediately head to the sea. There was a 2 headed baby at the preserve for a while. Quite the sight!
