Good news: Almost off my SSRI. Bad news: Definitely smoking again...

This is my final week on my antidepressant. Unfortunately, and really only because I have a terrible job in retail, I have fallen off the non-smoking bandwagon. I made it 10 months. Now I get to start the process all over again.

SSRIs are a weird creature. They stop some mood swings but induce others. EdwardSmith74 Jul 2013 #1

No judgments here either. I smoked for 30 years - I know how hard it is to quit. kcass1954 Jul 2013 #3

Ironically, I just had to call in for a renewal on mine - and I'm smoking again too - pipe. Good luck. Depression is a disease and it's far more common than most people know. Just out of curiosity, why are you stopping the SSRI? Don't answer if it is uncomfortable for you.

I know quitting is a bear. Gotta be a bear getting off the SSRI.

ETA - I am probably lucky that we didn't have SSRIs when I was young. Surely some doc would have said take 'em.

I haven't had many issues and I've tapered off several different varieties at one time or another. It really depends on the person and the specific SSRI.

If so congrats! If not I would definitely go back to the psychiatrist and see what else might work. As for the smoking, well some SSRIs are used as effective smoking cessation drugs so perhaps the two are linked.

If you ever need to talk about depression don't hesitate to drop me a PM, I've been dealing with my own issues for a long time.

I quit smoking. When I really felt the urge I smoked only herbal cigarettes. They are awful. One day I said “ENOUGH!“. And I never smoked again. Now when I see somebody smoking, I get the thought and sensation of those disgusting herbal smokes in my mind. And I never crave. It has been 5 years. I have no desire to smoke. Good luck, however you do it. And try the quitnet.com
