OMG it's HOT!!!
If you have an Austin Energy themostat they are turning it down every now and then for 15 minutes to avoid rolling blackouts!
Keep cool and drink water!

121°
Paulie
(8,462 posts)with all the extra heat coming off the blacktop. A/C can barely keep up even on full blast.
My mom told me back in the 40's, in the morning they would mop the floors to help cool off the house, as it takes heat out of the air. Something to try for those 15 minutes!
I saw a clip on the news that 120's are expected out west. Yikes!

(55,014 posts)but it is on a block wall and probably 10 degrees hotter than in general, 96 IN my house still at 6:30
It was a nasty one today. in the last hour the wind changed and we are choking on smoke that I think is coming up from around Cananea in Mexico.
If it is where I think it is they made it into a preserve a few years ago and kicked off all the livestock. Fuel load was getting pretty major.
I don't know how you do it!
Mad respect! I think i'd die!!

I've made a note to self on your info... I am in awe. You really must be made of steel!
When the temps get hot here, I turn my ac down and PRAY!

(6,530 posts)I grew up on the east coast-- hot and humid summers... hated hated hated it, and moved away.
I've lived in Seattle for 20 years now, and now I'm a complete dishrag when it comes to hot weather. We got to like 85 today and we're all prickly and whiny! No brownouts here, though, because almost no one has A/C.
I do miss the summer thunderstorms, though...

(6,011 posts)It was 104ºF in the shade yesterday, will be the same this afternoon, and 108ºF predicted for tomorrow!
It was 92ºF in rooms away from the AC. Ceiling fans in the LR & BR help make it tolerable, as well as a box fan to help get the air out of the house after the sun goes down.
Anything over body temp and you really feel enervated, especially with high humidity, but it's 30% here which isn't too bad.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I also have a dehumidifier running for the past 24 hours.
It gets cool inside around 4AM.
If I open the windows for the night air I'll also be letting in the moisture.

(53,339 posts)We're in L.A. County, about 60 miles North of the city, but it's high desert here. We hit 113 a couple months ago, well before summer began, but that's unusual (it was a record for the day).
Still, Arizona and Nevada totally put us to shame when it comes to bragging rights for the heat.
I used to live in L.A. and I guess I just didn't pay attention. I commiserate and hope you can continue to find ways to keep cool. I think I would go mad living with those temperatures. I also live in high desert and for me, when it hits 100 or more ( usually never higher than 103 or 104) it is a nightmare. Even though it is, as they say, dry heat.
Hang in
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)I grew up i the San Fernando Valley, where on the really hot days you'd find my buddies and me sitting in my backyard, our backs propped against the block wall, saying, What do you wanna do?" "I dunno, what do you wana do?"
Almost everybody has some kind of A/C (though I know some who don't), so the only real worry for most is a power outage.
The bad part is that there isn't much of a cooldown overnight (it's still 89 here at midnight), so there isn't much natural cooling to take advantage of. It will get hot very quickly in the morning, and the A/C will have to start very early and run well into the night or early morning hours. The added expense will be a struggle for many.

BEEN THERE !!!
With a girl named Barbara (I know her last name, not telling)
Can't say what she did to me as we returned over the San Francisco Bridge to San Diego ...
But I had to slow down to about 20 miles an hour
then park under the South end of the bridge for a well needed recovery.
79 - ya could do that

(17,045 posts)is my favorite place hands down!
I've only had the opportunity to visit ONCE. It literally took my breath away. I have been to many places but nothing compares to SF.
If I had the money and the way I'd move there in two seconds!
I am so jealous!
I hope you are feeling better!

(20,776 posts)Fortunately we have Rent Control, so your rent won't jump in some huge way, putting you out on the street. Because of the way Gasoline is treated here, the prices of everything is affected, but they say there is less pollution in the air, than there used to be. Still there are always the farmer's market and co ops stores that have discount prices.
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)so I defiantly understand.
Your fine city just took my breath away.... I could see myself there! Of course, I am home here.

(20,776 posts)People from New York, (Well, the SF Giants came from New York) Chicago, and places all over the mid west. They say that during the 60s a lot of kids came out for the Summer of Love in the Haight Ashburry. Many of them ended up staying, and some of them are building owners now. Not only has SF always had a lot of immigrants, they have had transplants from all over the country. SO much so, its hard to find people who are natives from this city! I am a San Francisco born native... many of my current friends are transplants.

(20,776 posts)MY rent control is in place, that this place will never be expensive, so long as I don't move. But places I have moved from have shot up. One place used to be 735 dollars a month, in the Haight Ashburry. Its currently over 2000 a month, last I checked. I sure hope for that price, they managed to clean up the cockroaches and mice, because that place was infested.

It's easier, and cheaper to heat up a place, than cool it down.
Especially up North, where we can heat with wood.
Hydro goes out, still gots heat.
I have generators for backup if the hydro goes out, but have rarely needed them for AC - mainly my fridges to keep my food safe.
For being outside, ya can only take so many clothes off when it's hot - then momma nature just boils ur skin -
In the cold, we just put layer on top of layer and so on - sometimes I wear 5 layers of clothing for outside in the winter - extra gloves and toques on a warming rack near the woodstove. Hands, ears get cold - wander in, get a warm set - back out we go!
It was a nice 75 for Canada Day - and about 45 overnight
We be COOL
