Something smells really bad in my livingroom but I don't know what. I wish I had a dog to

suss it out. My cat is not only useless, but probably guilty. Yup. It smells that bad. How do I find out what and where it is. My sense of smell is terrible.

Try checking behind or under furniture.

I found my cat's cache today...in the basement, in an area where I seldom go.

The smell probably wafts up the furnace vents, even when it is off.

if it's something rotting most animals will shy away fro it.......so it's your turn to get that bright flash light ,some gloves and do the crawl .

we always forget an onion or potato that stinks the place up but how would that get into the living room ? had any snacks in there that may have spilled ? ??????????

or behind/under an entertainment center could be a place something got knocked under.

6. If it's something rotting a dog will roll in it, the stinkier the better

Had a dog when I was a kid who loved to roll in dead carp washed up on the river bank.
Most dogs will if given the opportunity.
That's the way dogs are.

5. Can you describe the smell?...

Knowing what it might be might help find it. If it smells like a dead animal or rotting meat I'd check the basement or the lowest / darkest corners you can find if you don't have a basement.

Basement apartment would be the right place for it, dead mouse / rat maybe your cat dragged in. Decomposing things can be hard to find. Good luck. D:

seen the critter before now. No critters in here except for my cat and the odd spider. I'm just trying to get ideas here as to what could have happened. I'm at a total loss. Sorry if it seems like a strange thing to brainstorm about.

and the barf is hidden somewhere, that can smell pretty bad.

Good luck finding it. Having hidden sources of stink in your living space is so yucky. Blech!

12. cat peeing on the sofa or chair cushions?

It can sink through. Turn them over to take a look. If it's that, he or she may have a urinary tract infection and need vet care.

Or it could be a skunk sprayed outside. That will clear up in a few days.

Or a dead mouse in the wall, that takes longer to stop smelling.

13. Dead animal in your walls or attic space or under the floor

We used to have this happen in the fall, when mice came into the house for warmth, then died somewhere. Don't use any mouse poisons because that's what kills them. Eventually the stink will go away, but if it's a big animal like a raccoon or squirrel, it will take a while.

We had a litter of raccoons move into our chimney once. Raccoon pee in the chimney is a pretty impressive smell.
