(8,492 posts)A birthday for some people is a lot like a funeral. It's not for the birthdayee it's for the friends and relatives who drag themselves out of the woodwork to tell you they love you.
I don't mind mine, so much. I liked it better when it was fun. Now, It's sorta boring.
Let people love you for a day, even if it makes you wanna hide.
Happy day before your birthday!!!!

(21,020 posts)with Facebook on my birthday.
Usually I do show my birthdate on my profile, until about a week before my actual birthday. Then I remove it until a day or two after, when I put it back on. That doesn't prevent people who know it's my birthday from wishing me a happy birthday, but one thing it does do is make me believe that anyone who didn't had no idea that it was my birthday.
See, because it's not the ones who do wish me a happy birthday. It's the ones who don't...that's what hurts my feelings.
So I fool myself into thinking that the ones who don't really do care but just didn't know.
sigh...
this is what social anxiety looks like...
PS...Happy Birthday tomorrow

(10,337 posts)my inlaws think every birthday should be celebrated. I am soooo tired of having to buy crap for 30 year olds because they still think their arrival on this earth entitles them to gifts.
Regarding my own birthday, I tell them all to ignore it. I'm 62. If I need something I can buy it myself. Well, unless you wanted to give me an Aston Martin.

(20,234 posts)I didn't have any family in the area, even the husband was out of town for the week for work.
But I had a nice dessert, and enjoyed it guilt free, and spent some time doing stuff I enjoyed. It's not about gifts so much as taking time out for myself for the day. When the husband got back, he asked if I wanted anything, and what I really wanted was some help getting bird netting over the cherry trees, so he helped with that instead of buying stuff for me.

(6,261 posts)In fact, none of my friends knows when it is or even how old I am exactly.
As a kid, birthdays meant going off nearly every weekend to one of my parents' numerous siblings to sit in tiny, smoke-filled and overheated living rooms being served tiny cups of milky tea and biscuits and listening to banal family conversations and innuendo about absentees. While I'd be sitting there thinking how much rather I wanted to be at home reading, one of the aforementioned aunts or uncles would interrupt my thoughts telling me that I was becoming quite a big boy already and how was school coming along?
When it was my birthday, the same pack of relatives would come to our house, but I could at least disappear into my room after a while, feigning fatigue.
So, no, I never got into birthday parties

So, I think maybe birthdays are overrated.

(41,990 posts)Mine and everyone else's. We were born! We were born! I know not everyone's had a great life. I've had some really terrible things happen too, but all in all I'm happy I've gotten to be in this crazy old world. AND, I want the attention.

(2,955 posts)My older sister had a twin which embedded into her body (ectopic). She never knew until her early 20's when they found the fetus during a hysterectomy.
The hospital in San Fransisco had it as a teaching specimen at one time. It has been over 40 years ago, so it is not such an usual occurrence these days.
That may explain why she always seems to be yearning for something we could never put a finger on.

(205,731 posts)This happened to my friend, as well. Her parents were told that she might not survive, but her twin passed away instead. She has always remembered and named her only daughter the same name as her parents gave her lost twin sister. I know that doing this meant so much to her...

(9,612 posts)Nasty shit happens on my birthday. Most notably my 38th birthday where I wound up in the hospital and nearly died from a perforated intestine.
Since then, I don't let people acknowledge the day.

(38,958 posts)I have a small celebration, usually a couple of cards in the mail, go out for a dinner, a gift from the spouse and a call from the daughter. It's nice to be remembered and I enjoy that. I much prefer celebrating the Birthdays of others close to me as a celebration of their sharing their lives with me.
Have a good one on your birthday and hopefully those days that follow.
