I just came back from our (Safeway) supermarket . Now I know the other day I posted how San Francisco is foggy though out the summer, and that sunny hot days seemed rare. But I wanted a perfect treat, that I could have for a while. So, I bought some Saran wrap, and a water melon which was less than $2.00! Brought it home, cut it up, wrapped it in plastic wrapped and stored it in my fridge. I suspect I will eat it far more in frequency than just breakfast... but, hey this is a treat!
I love California Watermelons! I hope everyone has a chance to grab some before the summer is out. Who can not love this???

(20,776 posts)I am lactose intolerant so if I do have some, it has to be very little in soda, as a float. But still, even that gives me a hard time.
I was just looking on youtube about how this gal made a watermelon slushy! Its too bad I don't have a blender!

(34,136 posts)The best watermelon comes from North Florida in my opinion! Or any place that grows enough watermelon to have festivals for it.

(322 posts)Keep in mind with all the kitchen gadgets that are now in the store, if I remember right you can pick up a blender for next to nothing.
Especially since food processors came into being....
I've seen a couple at yard sales for next to nothing also.

(17,671 posts)Somebody would spit a seed. Then somebody else would respond by spitting a seed. We would move past spoon catapults and before it was over we would have a full on watermelon rind food fight.
Oh to be young again.

(28,158 posts)I served it in between the formal dessert and the meal. I'm weird, I lightly salt mine. I know of no other person who does that. It's how my grandmother fed it to me as a child though, and I still prefer it such to this day.

(28,158 posts)It's a higher source of lycopene than tomatoes. Not to mention it screams summer and makes us all think of happier times when we were children.
I'm off to have more myself. To our health, both mental and physical!

(28,158 posts)I adore complex flavor blends. That looks amazing and I'm imagining it with a tangy vinaigrette to off set the deep, heady cheese favors and the juicy sweet of the melon.
I'm currently nibbling on my third slice. It appears I'm in good company.

Watermelon is a vine-like flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit, which is also called watermelon, is a special kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind and fleshy center. Wikipedia

What I like about yours is that it has SEEDS. It's harder and harder to find a seeded watermelon; the last time I did, it cost MORE than the seedless.
