Walking back to the hotel after dinner here in Kauai I noticed something move out of the corner of my eye. When I turned I saw a largish frog. I've never seen a wild one this size or type in Vancouver so despite it being a rather common animal I thought it was neat. Trying to get its picture only managed to scare it with the flash. However I noticed I could get right up to him without him hopping off. Hmm.. I should be able to pick him up then. Yup, to my surprise I was able to That's when he peed all over my feet, Lol. Here's the PIC I got of the sucker though.

(9,878 posts)there are no native amphibians in Hawaii. all of the ones there have been introduced from elsewhere. the one you're holding is commonly known as a giant marine toad or cane toad; the scientific name is Bufo marinus. this toad is somewhat well known because it has become a huge pest everywhere it has been released, especially Australia and south florida. they are native down here in costa rica.
they can get quite large....much larger than the one you are holding. and, yes, when picked up they will almost always pee on you.

(6,154 posts)I've heard of the toad infestation in Australia and I know that much of what's on Hawaii, both flora and fauna, has been introduced with devastating consequences. Nice to know the type of toad it was, thanks. The latest animal to become a native pest here seems go be the rooster. At least on Kauai, there are more roosters here roaming the countryside than people it seems. They were released from their coops during the 92 hurricane and after that they multiplied like crazy, no predators.

(6,154 posts)Lol. No there are hens I guess I should have said chickens. But it's the roosters that stand out. They have jokingly made the rooster the new island "unendangered" species, there are tourist shirts with Kauai and a rooster on them all over.

(9,878 posts)....the toads the kids were licking are Colorado River Toads (Bufo alvarius ), a similar species.

(46,757 posts)I walked by this bush and thought I heard a noise behind me and turned around to see a toad and black racer directly behind me. Judging by the injury on the toad's leg he must have been in the snake's mouth and intentionally jumped towards me, hoping to break the snake's grip. It worked. He was about eight inches away from the racer who was looking to lock his jaw around the toad again.
I was startled but not afraid. I know racers will rear up on their tails if you corner them, so I just use hand gestures to tell him to leave. He wasn't too happy to go, but, he left.
So I grabbed the toad and brought him into the pool cage where he would be safe from the snake. I figured I would return him back to the backyard after it got dark.
I mostly forgot about him until ten o'clock that night. He wasn't hard to find. Dummy had jumped into the pool and was treading water. I got him with the net and took him outside, and when I put him down I said, "With your luck an owl is waiting in the tree and you won't be around much longer."

(34,073 posts)and as for you--you'll always be able to say:
if there's one thing i've learned in life it's that frogs pee on you when you pick them up.
(not everyone can say that)

(206,016 posts)I had frogs as pets when I was a kid and never knew that, though I don't remember handling them all that much. We have some very cute ones around here, too. I once pulled into the garage and I found one of these sitting on my hood, like an ornament...
