The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI saw the new Star Trek movie this morning, it was great.
I didn't really care for the first one but this second one was fun to watch.
It was a $6 well spent.

(18,705 posts)I am not going to give anything away but something happens that makes
Spock cry.
Spock doesn't seem so stiff in this early version.
This was a fun movie.
I am going back to see it in 3D next week.
The actions scenes should be good in 3D.
The movie does have a link to the past.
If anyone follows Star Trek you will pick it up quick.
Young Spock is kind of hot, I don't blame Uhura at all.
rug
(82,333 posts)In private who knows.
Uhura must be hanging around for a good reason.
Spock is half human.
If I remember right Vulcans can have sex anytime they want.
If they didn't there wouldn't have been many Vulcans.
Sex only every 7 years doesn't make a for a big population.

(20,453 posts)Spock and other Vulkcans can get EXTREMELY HOT during Pon farr, mind you...

It is really funny.

(38,328 posts)... and I hated the depiction of San Francisco, the Star Fleet uniforms, and the gratuitous explosions...
But I'll probably watch it again on the big screen before it comes out on DVD.
And, MFM style spoiler alert...

... cat alien twins in bed??? Oh, Kirk, there are far better dive bars. Don't mess with the cat women.

The formal looking uniforms did suck, Spock looked strange with a hat.

(6,154 posts)with a nod to the ST franchise. The old flavour of Trek is gone. They aren't about anything any more, they have no deeper social message to get across. But I knew that walking in and I still enjoyed it as an action filck, it's well made for what it is.

(24,146 posts)horrible crush on him.

i also just managed to talk my husband into taking me to see it at the drive in tomorrow night. we saw the first one there, so i told him we had to see the second one there.

Old Spock and young Spock if I remember right.
I did enjoy this one.

(38,328 posts)... a universe of recursive "reboots" all the way down like turtles.

(42,177 posts)OS, TNG, DS9, VOY and to an extent, ENT are the main universe. Abrams will be in a different one.
TNG will always be the best series in my mind.
AmyDeLune
(1,846 posts)they established that in the first one. Spock Prime travels not only backwards but sideways in time, crashing into the Abrams Universe along with Nero. That's why Kirk is born in space (not Iowa) with blue eyes and no older brother Sam. Also it keeps the Original Series timeline intact and untouched while allowing for new stories with old characters.
Geeksplanation over.

(23,572 posts)there was a tribble in it. I loved the humor of the movie. The explosions were a bit much. They could have cut a half hour of "action" out of the movie and I would have enjoyed it more.
But, the laughs in it were great!

(18,705 posts)They have to attract younger movie goers.
The actors seem to fit the roles well.
The actor who plays Bones is excellent.

(5,604 posts)but I grew up accepting that the TOS was how it was all gonna work out for mankind (paper-mache boulders and rubber suited aliens and all!)
I very surprisingly enjoyed the reboot, and am looking forward to the current one.

(18,705 posts)This movie does have a link to the old Star Trek show.
The plot line is there for future movies to follow.
I don't want to say what it is for those who haven't seen it yet.
It was nice surprise to see it.

(6,234 posts)Sorry, but if they can't be bothered to get something as basic as the fucking BRIDGE correct, and care so little about Star Trek history that they ignore the entire military rank and command structure, then it's not Star Trek. It's Buck Rogers with Star Trek names.

(7,570 posts)But you never watched the movie, so how would you know?
Actually, I find that there are SO many callbacks to the original series and movies put in these films to please the fanboys, that they're becoming tiresome. I would like to see an all-new tale with stuff I haven't seen before. The ending of this one seems to imply that they're going in that direction.
Demo_Chris
(6,234 posts)How could I not. And I REALLY wanted to love it. I am a hardcore Star Trek afficianado. I am the geek who went to the Star Trek conventions. I watched Shatner singing about saving the whales at the Star Trek convention in Los Angeles.
I even MASTERED the thousand page rules to Star Fleet Battles.
There were many things about the first movie I loved, but there was a whole lot I hated. I am willing to set aside the ludicrous contradictions and craters in the plot, I'll even disregard the zany treatment of some of the characters, but you cannot completely discard the entire foundation of the Star Trek universe and get a pass.
A Cadet is not an officer. He or she is at best an ACTING officer. Once they have graduated from the Academy they would become an Ensign -- the lowest ranked officer on any Star Ship. Acting Ensign Kirk would be in the chain of command, but at the bottom behind hundreds of higher ranking officers on board. An acting Ensign might be forced to take command, he or she is an acting officer, but only if every real officer on the ship had died. This has actually happened in real life by the way, but that's another topic. The idea that a Cadet or Ensign would be promoted to Captain is absolutely ridiculous. It's as insane as promoting eleven year old Harry Potter to replace Dumbledore as Headmaster of Hogwarts -- or promoting a kid in Army Officer Candidate School to the rank of Full Bird Colonel.
As for the bridge, they took a design and layout that every Star Trek series has managed to follow and update, and they threw it in the trash. I was halfway through the movie before I even realized the silly thing was supposed to be the bridge. It looked like a shopping mall beauty salon to me, others have likened it to an Apple Store. Whichever you prefer, it damn sure wasn't the bridge of the Enterprise -- it was a horror. They put it in the wrong place on the freaking ship -- there's no corrider there.
It sounds petty but it's not. There was absolutely no reason they couldn't have taken the original design and spruced it up. They wanted to give a giant fuck you to the fans of the original. They succeeded, so fuck them.
It's a shame really. I really wanted to like it. They got so much exactly right. The combat was cool, the scene with Kirk as a kid stealing the car was PERFECT, the actors did a decent job. But they hired a director who was a tool.
