what sounds he now hears are transmitted through his skull. He was terrified of thunder until he went deaf... Now he no longer notices it, no matter how loud. Fire works are the same story.

the anxiety in the others?

If you have a dog, why not try buying some human earplugs...see how they fit, whether they will remain in, and of course try them out during a storm.
