Just got a new XPS 18. Ask me anything.
For those who have missed the commercials, this thing is being touted as the "future of the desktop computer". It's basically a full blown PC wrapped into an 18" tablet form factor. It has a 750gb hard drive, Intel I5 processor, and 8Gb of RAM. For PC use, you set it on its dock and can use a fullsize keyboard and mouse. For mobile use, you pick it up and use the touchscreen and onscreen keyboard. The whole thing weighs less than my old laptop.
So far I've wiped the HDD and have Win8 Enterprise and Mint 14 dual booting. I have Visual Studio, Photoshop, and a number of other software dev apps installed, along with a few games. Haven't done a lot of work on it yet, but it seems pretty responsive.
My first impression is that Dell has struck gold. The device is a bit pricey, but it's in the ballpark of many premium computers and should attract an audience. It's very cool to work on, and its light weight means it isn't cumbersome to move around.
Could this really be what your next "desktop" computer will look like?
