The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsA repeat of a fun old thread: What are your WORST DU qualities?
I know we're all stellar human beings, but let's face it; people have us on ignore ( ohiosmith!). Why might that be the case?
Me? I think I'm too freaking earnest. I want to 'SPLAIN stuff, even when what someone clearly wants is either a fight or a flirtation, or at the very least a short, pithy joke that they can steal and use on FB, claiming it for themselves and never giving ME an ounce of credit for all the hard work I've done and the trouble I've gone to in order to enlighten you people.
Oh, and I can't post pictures for shit.

(29,047 posts)I earned many of my ignores when I was trying to explain some feminist arguments, and I recently earned some while trying to explain pro-life arguments.
I don't agree with every viewpoint I try to explain, such as the pro-life viewpoint, but I don't think that matters to some posters.
Misrepresenting arguments has been a pet peeve of mine lately.

(3,179 posts)I believe some people are either unable to respect differing opinions or they deliberately misconstrue the comments of other posters in order to promote their own opinions or an obvious agenda.

(21,020 posts)I am a 'splainer too.
If I think someone doesn't understand, I'll keep trying to clarify until the person gets it.
I use different methods, but my favorite is the analogy, which some people then jump on as being a "strawman" argument.
Contrary to what many think, I don't do it to make people agree with me, but just to see that there's another side to every story and my side is just as valid as theirs is. I don't care if we don't agree, as long as the other person says, yes, I see your point.
Oh, and I have this really annoying habit of being able to see two sides of an argument, much to the disgust of some people who think that failing to take one side or the other is "wishy washy".

(14,624 posts)I hate it when Duers attack each other, ad nauseum, especially when they have high post counts. It's obvious there is some history there, and it's so childish. Plus it wastes a lot of space when you merely want to read DU replies to an OP.
That, and someone who is rude and confrontational for no apparent reason . . . no tolerance for that either.

(6,336 posts)Especially in threads where it's not necessary. I've got cable internet, but it's not that fast and I hate when a thread takes forever to load because of all the video.
I ignore threads that are just music videos because they load too slowly.

By 'save the animals' posts, I mean links to sites where you can buy a scarf and land will be donated for elephant habitat, or whatever.
Rarely do those posts ever get a reply. And I get it - this is the Lounge, a lighthearted place - but I try not to post things that are bummers. Just informational / optional pieces. But I think they make people feel uncomfortable.

(8,217 posts)Got there about the first week or two I started in DU.
I mentioned that I am an Independent, and explained two different view points at the same time and stating that in the end, what they are working towards is the same thing. Especially the differences where just the way things were worded.
I decided it isn't worth the aggravation, and has been mostly stuck in the lounge after.

(1,273 posts)I've mellowed a bit of late, but I really get irked when people try to act intelligent but can't write using proper English. I don't post my corrections any longer, because some people may not have English as a first language, and therefore deserve some leeway.
