I may today..although my husband says it's not time yet.
My house is really hot with the windows open, and I have a ton of yellow pollen everywhere.
We usually try to wait until May, but I can't handle it.

(51,122 posts)Lived in the South all my life until a year ago. We cut the AC on in April.
Gonna be a hot one.

(16,334 posts)I switched from heat to air weeks ago. We haven't needed it much but it has been running more the past few days.
The thermostat tells me when "it's time" lol.

(5,909 posts)My son has been complaining too; I'm like talk to your Dad.
When I'm sweating in my house at 9 am, it's time.
I'm going for it. Thanks!

(16,334 posts)I am heat intolerant and have been all my life. It made for a difficult situation when I had roommates but I made it clear to my husband before we got married that this was part of the package. It's the only way I can live in Georgia with him. Come mid-August I will have fantasies of living on my own in Maine or one of the Dakotas.

(5,909 posts)The past few years he has become more cold intolerant. I hate the heat down here just as much as when we first moved here.
He's not cheap; he thinks it's not hot enough yet and that I jack it up too high. Tough shit, pal!

(7,515 posts)A/C also serves to dry out a house, depending on when you live, the humidity is taking a toll on your home.
When I lived up north, in NJ, my A/C went on the moment the house became uncomfortable due to either heat or humidity.

(1,819 posts)In south Florida also. I don't think we ever turned it off this year.
Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)I had it off for a few days when the temp was in the 40s and 50s....but just a very few days!

(30,947 posts)I would go from my air-conditioned house, to my air-conditioned car and then to my air-conditioned office. When I was a kid down there, I did not know that there were any seasons other than year-round summer. I moved to Florida when I was 6 years old, and only vaguely remember the snow in Pennsylvania where I was born. Now I am in North Georgia and I have discovered there are actually 4 seasons, which I love.

(7,515 posts)We moved here when the children were very young....It was a great lifestyle for them. Bicycles, beaches, sports activities, etc. all year long. Having lived here most of their lives they do not want to hear that I would like to relocate to a more varied climate. I guess I am stuck with the heat and humidity of FL.

(3,065 posts)And we do have seasons here SD... Wet season and dry season. I think wet season arrived in our area about two weeks ago.

(3,867 posts)It's been over 80 for the last week, other than when it has rained. The humidity of Alabama makes it way worse. I recently moved back to Bama from Dallas. 95 degrees and 100% humidity is way way worse than 115 degrees and dry.

(39,343 posts)We turn ours on based on the thermometer. I don't care the month, I turn it on when it gets warm. I still like opening the windows on nice days, but in Florida we've got to run it more than not.

(4,833 posts)has a setting for heat and a setting for AC. In "winter" it is not uncommon for both to get tripped and run during the same 24 hour period.
Humidity is an issue here too, and the AC system is also a giant dehumidifier.
So, my AC is never turned off.

(14,624 posts)Yesterday the high was 81, with the humidity at 93%.
It's 75 right now and expected to hit 87 this afternoon, with humidity around 900%. Saunas are redundant in south Louisiana . . . just walk outside for your daily steam.

(18,705 posts)I have a window fan going, a real window fan.
Works just fine, during the day it blows hot air out of the house.
At night the fan brings in cool night air.
That is what people used to use before ac.
The trouble is once you go under the ac all is lost.
I am fine with fans now.
I am holding off until late May maybe the first of June.
I don't like big light bills.
I think it is best to be a little able to handle a little heat.

(5,364 posts)Even though we had a colder then normal winter, there were a few days here and there in the upper 60's and low 70's. I would turn it on just enough to break the stuffiness. My house is such that when the sun is out, it bakes the southern side of it and in hardly any time at all it can make it hot and stuffy inside. Even a day in the low 50's will have the house at room temperature owing to the sun heat soaking the house. Here in NC, the spring pollen can get so thick you can damn near cross country ski on it, an so even though the temperatures are nice and the air is crisp, you really don't want to open the windows long at all, and so I use the A/C even on a 68 degree day.

(30,947 posts)I live in Georgia, just northwest of Atlanta and it is hitting the 80s. I hate weather in the 80s. I lived in South Florida most of my life before moving up here. I hated the heat in Florida and my A/C was on 24/7.

(12,132 posts)lol, my AC is on all the time. There were a few days when the outside temp was just low enough to keep the unit from kicking on but other than that, yeah, my AC is always on.
the weird thing is my grandpa is 92 and, as old folk are wont to do, keeps his thermostat on about 81° and his house is about a 800 sq feet bigger than mine yet his electric bill is consistently 2~300 bucks higher than mine.
I think we need to get him an energy survey done. His is also about 25 years newer than mine...

(5,909 posts)Look, my man is a great guy...too good sometimes. He accused me of not being "green" and when he comes home he's going to walk into an icebox.
Then he chilled out after his rant (pun intended) but I'm right in this situation.
Why be miserable and sweaty when we have central air? Jeepers.
Thanks guys!

(16,245 posts)When it was in the 80s but then the temperature dropped so I turned it off. But two weeks ago I was still running the heat.

(1,425 posts)AC usually runs from March thru November. We use it mostly to get rid of the humidity. I usually set it at 80 and use ceiling fans. I even have a ceiling fan in the kitchen.
