The beautiful songs of Enrico Macias

He was born in Algeria before the war of independence from France. As a Jew, he was forced to flee the country for his safety after the murder of his musician father-in-law by the National Liberation Front during the fighting and resettled in France. He is a French-speaking performer of his own brand of Judeo-Arabic-European influenced music and has been a major world talent in music since the 1960s, although he’s not well-known in the U.S. He’s performed twice at Carnegie Hall as well as Royal Albert Hall and has enjoyed popularity in England, France, Russia, Japan, Turkey, Israel and many other countries. His recordings are even popular in his native Algeria among the people, although the various Algerian governments have refused to let him return to his homeland since he left it in 1961, as he is a Jewish musical star. Many of his songs are laments of homesickness and longing for the beauty of Algeria and the city of Algiers, known as the “white city” (Algiers La Blanche) because of its gleaming white buildings in the bright North African sun. A number of his songs are about peace and love for all mankind and he was named Singer of Peace by UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and Roving Ambassador for Peace and the Defense of Children by Kofi Annan because of his good works.
