The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm a white guy and was wondering why some black folks give me dirty looks when I wear a "hoodie".
It keeps happening and I'm 99% sure it isn't in my head.
Am I being insensitive? Is it related to the Trayvon Martin case?
Am I violating a new social more? I've worn these my whole life. Who hasn't?
I have two. One is plain black and the other is gray and has an Everlast logo.
I seem to get more negative attention when wearing the black one.
Anybody have any thoughts?

(4,833 posts)Still have a few dozen business suits in the back of a closet, but haven't had one on in several years. (Note to self: clean out the damned closet).
So I'm probably the wrong guy to be giving advice at this point.
But if it were me, and I were sensing that sort of hostility, I'd be making a wardrobe change.

(54,003 posts)In the school where I teach (working class suburb in Houston), hoodies are de rigueur (is that a word?) for all the guys. White guys who wear them don't get razzed. But when I wore one last winter, the kids got a laugh out of it. My sense is that it was an age thing, not a race thing.
You might also check your hoodie jacket for any slogans or logos on it that might be offensive.
<== hint, not a good choice

(20,176 posts)explicitly for my grandma's old neighbor Mark. On more than one occasion, the state police have brought him back in the middle of the night caught poaching deer in his tighty whiteys. The rest of it speaks for itself, he's a deer-poaching scumbag, but the lack of clothes had me and the game-warden befuddled until we asked...we were sorry we asked.
He's hunting without any pants on, because he's too lazy to put pants on and "what fucking difference does it make what I wear to go hunting?"
