(32,080 posts)Southern food doesn't get any better than shrimp and grits.

(72,300 posts)Louisiana should provide that meal better than anywhere if my memory serves me correctly.

(32,080 posts)Loads of good seafood there, and lots of great shrimp and grits. Also excellent Low Country Boil (Frogmore Stew) and she crab soup.

(72,300 posts)I almost relocated down there about ten years ago.

It's also close to Savannah and Hilton Head, also good food towns. Plus, it's the gateway to my favorite place in South Carolina: Hunting Island State Park. Hunting Island has one of my most favorite beaches. They filmed the Vietnam scenes from "Forrest Gump" along the canal there. I stood where Bubba died.

(72,300 posts)and with different boyfriends in my lifetime. There is something bout that place.
We tied up a 66 foot sport fishing boat there in the early '90s to ride out a storm.
In '66 St Simons Island didn't seem like it was too far for a day trip.
Teenagers were like that back then. All of my friends drank beer but we were drug free!

(12,132 posts)at a new place on South Orange ave - south of downtown - and my friend LOOOOOOOOOOVES shrimp and grits and this placed had it on the menu so he ordered it.
Well when the dish came it was shrimp and polenta. My friend was offended and we've never been back to that place. Personally, I don't even know what the difference is but man was he pissed. The waiter said it was their version of shrimp and grits but my buddy wasn't buying that. As far as he's concerned, they lied to his face.
I like that there's okra in your picture. I love me some okra.

As a transplanted Yankee (KY-TN border for 3 years, Atlanta for 1), I never much liked
grits (nor, to tell you the truth, MOST "Southern foods" -- with the exception of BBQ,
red beans & rice and fried chicken. OK. biscuits n' gravy, too).
.
I REALLY liked what our stereotypically SASSY diner waitress (the best kind) told me
about how you could spot a Yankee by how he/she ordered grits. Instead of the South's
habit of butter/black pepper, we're used to Cream of Wheat and have them with milk
and sugar (guilty, your honor).

(12,132 posts)that's how I love them. Sometimes cheddar cheese melted in is good too.
I think I've had polenta but I can't remember if I liked it...all i know is every time we drive by that place, my buddy gives them the finger and hollers "LIARS" out the window.
The funny part is I think he likes polenta too. He just didn't like getting polenta when he ordered grits.
Sassy diner waitresses are so good they make it worth going even if the food isn't the best. I'd rather have OK food and a sassy waitress than good food but dull waitstaff.
