.. in a garbage can. It was pretty damp, but looked almost brand new. I had to wonder why it got thrown away - and it was my size! Checking garbage cans for used clothing, anything sellable or possibly edible has become a routine. Back in the Clinton years, it would have been nothing to go to Wilsons and plop down a few Benjamins for a great jacket. But I musn't think about that - letting memories wash over you dulls the survival instinct.
The guy could have donated the jacket to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, where it would be resold and the money would go to help people. But even at those prices, it would have been out of my reach. I slip my newfound treasure under my 3 year old Wal-Mart 20 dollar coat, which seems to be made out of paper and plastic and does not keep the wind off.
First stop is the dollar store for a suede brush and a big erasor. Then to the day room of the shelter. I lay out the jacket and am surrounded by admirers, envious of my find. "Did you steal it? Who would throw something like that out"? To the mens room, to gently dry the dampness under the hand dryer, then back to the table to brush the nap back up. Just like new!
Thanks, suede jacket guy. You may have saved my life. Staying warm out here means staying alive.

(102,328 posts)Going though dumpsters is a great way to bring home an infestation--which will cost you far more in time, effort, and expense to control than any suede coat. Just saying....
