We are almost approved to get her, there is a home visit later today and hopefully this dog becomes ours.
Any guesses as to what her various breeds may be?

hedgehog
(36,286 posts)part German Shepherd. Does she have the thick German Shepherd coat? Ours has a lot of hairs that are dark at the root, blond at the tip. When I got his license, i put the color down as "tweed".

(58,685 posts)The head and face have that wider solid look of a pit bull, while the body looks like it has the slimmer belly and hips of a shepard.

(37,648 posts)face with the muscles on the jaws on sides, not a wide mouth (pits have a mouth that looks like goes from ear to ear), not hte mark on forehead (pits often have a distinguishing mark on forehead....a depression line). But she does have the heart shaped coloring above the eyes, like a Shepherd, Shepherd coloring, long straight legs, slender build, thick prick ears.
It'd be interesting to see the tail.

(32,086 posts)The ears and face look a lot more like a cattle dog than a German shepherd. The body, longer legs, and coloration seem more like a fox hound or some other long-legged hound breed.

(6,011 posts)I'd say Basenji with some Siberian Husky or German shepherd genes- the distinct "mask" is a husky trait.

on edit- Does she have a curly tail? Basenjis do.

(11,795 posts)We think he is Shiba Inu and dachshund. Shibas have very particular faces.
Is she a pup or an adult? Is she very vocal (Shiba inus are "warblers" as my husband says)?

(53,866 posts)from what we know. hence the guess that she might be part basenji

(37,648 posts)looks like German Shepherd. In particular, look at the heart shaped area above her eyes. What kind of tail does she have? Is she a pup? But those aren't Shepherd eyes, I think. Distinctive looking eyes. That's a clue. (Not a pit bull's eyes, BTW.)
She's a beauty.

(37,648 posts)Here's a shepherd mix. Note the distincting eye-liner eyes, like yours has, and the heart shaped area above the eyes. I didn't think yours had Shepherd eyes, but yours have the eyes of this dog, which is a shepherd mix:

(53,866 posts)like her eyes look so different in this one

(37,648 posts)I used to have a Shepherd mix years ago. He was mainly Shepherd, so looked like a standard Shepherd. I see Shepherd in your dog, but to a much lesser extent. Your dog is probably a Heinz 57.
I have a mix, too. She's a Jack Russell Terrier mix. No telling what else is in her, but I look to common breeds, since that's most likely. It's not likely she's partly some exotic breed. My guess is JRT & lab. Labs are very common, and my dog has a a couple of traits that labs have. But there's no mistaking the JRT.
I see now that your dog has the droopy cheeks. Not all breeds have that, so that's important. Something else about her looks familiar, but I can't place it. Hound, maybe? But don't listen to the posters that think maybe part pit bull...I'm no expert, but I did research pit bulls thoroughly, trying to decide if mine had pit bull in her (when I found her years ago). I don't see any of the distinguishing pit bull traits in your dog. Of course, a Heinz 57 can have 57 breeds and not look like most of 'em. In which case, the breeds don't matter. She's one a kind!
What I also noticed about your dog is that she has a deep chest and very high tucked in tummy. That's a trait of runners and hunters. Some hound dogs, for example. Greyhounds and such. The deep chest is on breeds that run distances. Not Shepherds or pit bulls. (Unless your dog is malnourished and still skinny from her abandonment days.)
Congratulations on your new member of the family!

(16,230 posts)Where are you getting her from that's so rigorous? Not that it's not necessarily a bad idea to make sure that the animal gets a good home, but when I was a kid, we went to the pound, saw a puppy we loved, paid the $5 fee and took it home.

(53,866 posts)these dog up to the north east to adopt them out
its an EXTENSIVE process. long application, references, vet reference, home visit and a large adoption fee
