my female cat couldn't stand my wife. But a few times that my wife was sick in bed the cat was huddled up next to her.

Over the years, I've seen several such situations with cats. One very stand-offish stray we took in suddenly became cuddling affectionate when I was lying around sick. She was more friendly overall afterwards, but never super domesticated.

I ordered a feral trap to catch him - 6 years later my beloved Riff Raff is still with me - he will never be super-cuddly but we do have a special connection

They intuitively sense when they need to be of comfort.

When I was growing up, our family had a male cat that was not overly lovey-dovey. It was always a treat when he would occasionally allow us to hold him. But whenever one of us kids were sick with some childhood flu or virus, he'd hang out with us in our bedrooms for hours. Usually at the bottom of our beds, which always seemed to make everything better. My mother always used to say that everything would be alright, and that we'd feel better soon, because 'Nurse Tom' was there.

My condolences to you bamademo. Watching your mother fade away must be very hard. I'm glad though, that your rescue kitty knows how much she means to you. It is his way of thanking you for being so good to him, while comforting your mother at the same time.

I've had a lot of experience with dogs, cats and horses( on a professional level regarding dogs and horses). Cats are a whole 'nother thing. I have read that their brains are closest to human brains but no scientific follow up .They are sure are never ending amazing creatures.

I'm sorry about your Mom.

Sounds like the Dr. Cat syndrome. I had forgotten about that since it's been awhile since I had a cat. They always seem to know when someone is sick and needs company.

Well, he did if one of my kids or my wife or my service dog came in to watch over me, but he was the main sentry. He only left to eat, drink, and use the litter box. They just know. My wife's sick right now (high fever) and he's with her, as is her dog (my service dog) and best I can tell they haven't left her alone at any point. Somebody is always on watch.

There was a cat in the news some time ago (forget when or where) who lived in an elderly care facility and so reliably predicted upcoming deaths by cuddling up to the individual that the staff eventually used it as a sign to call next of kin.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother, but I am glad that she had furry company at the end. I can only hope to be so lucky. Take care of that cat. If we have souls there's a good chance we can transfer the essense to another. Either way, the cat did an honorable and wonderful thing.

Born in a field behind my house, the mother abandoned her much too early. The kitten wandered up to me and smelled my shoe. Today I'm still the only human that can touch her without a quick whack with her claws. Here's my best most-amazing story:
One day I was gardening in the back yard when a very large and menacing Great Dane came barking into the yard towards me. My cat (Rugrat) jumped off the picnic table and planted herself between me and the dog - back arched and hissing. The dog retreated. I was totally amazed as I "didn't think feral cats cared about humans." Such devotion! Since then she has had a special place in my heart.
