Proposed new forum for DU: General Discussion

I'll start.

Brig. General Joseph Lane, general during the 1846-48 Mexican American War.

In 1846 the Mexican-American War broke.[1] Lane resigned his State Senate seat, and enlisted in a company of Indiana volunteers.[1] His company was assigned to the 2nd Indiana Volunteer Regiment, and Lane was elected colonel. He was soon appointed a brigadier general.[1]

Lane and the Indiana troops were then deployed to Mexico, where Lane fought with distinction, suffering two minor gunshot wounds and was promoted to major general.[1] Lane commanded the Indiana Brigade at the Battle of Buena Vista, where he served under General and future President Zachary Taylor.[1]

Lane also led the relief force which lifted the Siege of Puebla, defeating Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of Huamantla.

The leading Soviet general of WWII, he rose from peasant roots to the highest levels of the Red Army. His defense of Moscow and Stalingrad, and his smashing victory in the battle of Kursk (the greatest armored battle in history) made him a hero of the Soviet Union. His capture of Berlin in spite of huge casualties effectively ended the war in Europe, and earned him the nickname "the undefeated general". His innovative concepts of mechanized warfare, and development of the T-34 tank (widely regarded as the best tank of WWII) heavily influenced military thinking for a generation.

He became so famous in the USSR that Stalin feared he might become a rival for power, and decided to remove him from command of the Soviet Army. After Stalin's death, his reputation was still so great that in 1955 he was appointed as the Soviet Minister of Defense. Two years later, he was sacked from this position. He died in 1974 at age 78.

Many know of his action at Little Round Top with the 20th Maine, but how he was promoted to General is less well known.

In April 1864, Chamberlain returned to the Army of the Potomac and was promoted to brigade commander shortly before the Siege of Petersburg. There, in a major action on June 18, at Rives' Salient, Chamberlain was shot through the right hip and groin. Despite the injury, Chamberlain withdrew his sword and stuck it into the ground in order to keep himself upright to dissuade the growing resolve for retreat. He stood upright for several minutes until he collapsed and lay unconscious from loss of blood. The wound was considered mortal by the division's surgeon, who predicted he would perish; Chamberlain's incorrectly recorded death in battle was reported in the Maine newspapers, and Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant gave Chamberlain a battlefield promotion to the rank of brigadier general after receiving an urgent recommendation on June 19 from corps commander Maj. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren: "He has been recommended for promotion for gallant and efficient conduct on previous occasion and yesterday led his brigade against the enemy under most destructive fire. He expresses the wish that he may receive the recognition of his services by promotion before he dies for the gratification of his family and friends."[7] Not expected to live, Chamberlain displayed surprising will and courage, and with the support of his brother Tom, was back in command by November. Although many, including his wife Fanny, urged Chamberlain to resign, he was determined to serve through the end of the war. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Chamberlain

I believe he was the only General in US history to receive that promotion as a direct result of his action on the battlefield.

Despite falling victim to many historical drama flaws and being over 3 hours long, Gettysburg was remarkably engaging as a movie and featured some good acting, with Daniels' performance arguably the best.

J/K, loved the movie. While they may have sacrificed some historical accuracy to dramatic license, it was not as bad as some historical dramas I've seen.

He was way ahead of his time because he was the first to warn of the dangers of fluoridation. He was the first to link it with the loss of precious bodily fluids.

By law he is the senior officer in the US Military at all times. He has been General of the Armies of the United States (notionally a six-star general) since a day before Pershing was appointed to that rank.

Guevarra was once asked who best understood fighting in the western hemisphere. He listed Bolivar, himself, Longstreet, and Grant, and then said "but none of us compare to Washington".

Ernest King (an admiral, but I'm assuming that doesn't disqualify him?):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_King

It is commonly reported when King was called to be Cominch, he remarked,"When they get in trouble they send for the sons-of-bitches”. However, when he was later asked if he had said this, King replied he had not but would have if he had thought of it.

The analytic methods could be subdivided into the physical, the gas chromatographical, and the chemosensory method.
When measuring odor, there is a difference between emission and immission measurements. Emission measurement can be conducted by olfactometry using an olfactometer to dilute the odor sample. On the contrary, olfactometry is rarely used for immission measurement because of the low odor concentrations. The same measuring principals are used, but the judgment of the air assay happens without diluting the samples.
