I checked my index; I don't have your Walter in my line.

Was your Walter awarded lands and titles by William for participating in the Battle of Hastings?

I recently "met" a 2nd cousin on my Swedish line. Her grandmother and my grandmother were sisters.

My best friend, who introduced me to genealogy, turned out to be my 8th cousin.

My first husband was my 18th cousin, 3 times removed. I tell my daughter she is related to herself.

So welcome to the family!

....working on my genealogy way back past the 1600s has been a real thrill ride (I had originally worked the lines to 1600). Vikings, knights, Swedish royals, a giant, English royals, yada yada. Quite exciting. I haven't started looking for living descendants of those lines yet.

I've been looking for narratives about my ancestors. I've found that if there are records, they were generally either titled or landed gentry; no records were kept on the serfs. And for those with titles, one of the surprising sources of narratives has been Wikipedia.
I agree, this has been not only exciting, but since I enjoy reading history, it personalizes it for me.

in the old country the parish priests had to record when the lower classes moved from place to place, very useful.

At least I haven't found a criminal. In one of the groups I'm in, someone found an account of a murder trial for one of his ancestors.
