AMAZING how things can change. Just stopped by to say "hi." When I lived in Silicon Valley I also lived on DU. These days, not so much. No specific reason for that other than the fact that a lot of other things changed too. I only listen to hard rock and metal in the car now. I only watch movies with monsters, explosions, car chases, or mob figures. This town can rob you of your sense of nuance. In 100 other ways, life has improved dramatically. I don't miss the things I don't miss. And after being here for only six months, I'm still a work in progress.
ANYWAY...how the hell ARE ya?

Interesting times in The House of Blues, but that's another story for another time...

(30,885 posts)We've had a couple of live acts at the club that I think you would have LOVED.
One group...a family...called The Lacks. Day plays guitar, wife plays bass, daughter plays rhythm guitar, other daughter plays drums. They do "Free Bird." During the first few notes you go "Oh NO..." Then you realize dad learned the Allen Collins solo from Skynyrd's first album note for note, and everyone in the band is so precise while rocking like a house on fire. I sat there in the DJ booth and swear to God, I almost cried...it was AMAZING.
The other group belongs to Jack Reeves...who is Glen Campbell's cousin. Jack's sons Matt and Cole are up-and-comers...Matt's the guitar hero, and Cole plays bass and keyboards and is heavily into the Jerry Lee thing.
Most bands / musicians around town are nothing to write home about. There WAS one guy who played at the local coffee house. He plays guitar, sings, and uses Band Tracks...but sparingly. He mentioned that he had a Jimmy Buffett song but went on to play something else. After he finished that song I asked "Would that Jimmy Buffett song happen to be A Pirate Looks At Forty?" He said "Well, that's one of them," and played a version that was sublime. I only had five bucks on me with no money on the immediate horizon but had to throw a buck in his tip bucket.
Most importantly, the good musicians I've described above have made me want to play again. This town is wide open for quality performers. After a little woodshedding, I could be one of them.

(19,379 posts)Also sounds like you're in a good space to get back in the groove. Make it happen, you know it's good.
My band actually had a great event. Years ago we formed the band with two guitar players, a drummer, and myself. After a couple years one of the guitar players had some personal issues come up and left the band, and we we lost track of him. Well, a few weeks back I was going through some papers and I found his old cell phone number. I figured there was no way it was still good but decided to give it a try anyway. Long story short, he answered the phone and told me he had been trying to put a band together but couldn't find reliable bandmates. I told him we were still playing, and asked him to come sit in at a practice.
Man, it was like we had never stopped playing together! We dusted off some of the tunes we were doing ten years ago and nailed 'em right out of the gate. We went ahead and asked him to rejoin the band then and there, and he accepted the offer. It's great to have two guitars again, and with the keyboards we added a while back, we've got a pretty rounded out sound.
Funny how things in life go. I truly thought I'd never see my friend and bandmate again, but now he's right back where he belongs.

(30,885 posts)I still do "food porn" but these days it's shots of my own cooking.
I plan to venture into Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder city to seek restaurant clients. But while I am doing that I'll plan to drop by DU periodically for some food porn updates.

With all that fodder for posts, you can't stay away from DU.
