I'm just not into polka. The beer's okay, but that's not what I call dancing.

Late 70s. They also were pushing these frozen pina colada things. In a glass with this painting of some sort of saintly looking image on it. St Blob, I guess.

Strange venue.

My Dad couldn't listen to his am polka station while we were in the car, that kept fading in and out, and us kids cheered.

Many years ago when I was still young enough to manage polka dancing.

Everyone stared at me. It wasn't a good experience, but was sure memorable.

We practiced the various dance steps using ball bats as partners, then danced with fellow students.

The day we learned the polka happened to be during "parents week" when parents were invited to stop in to school and observe their kids' classroom experiences.

My parents stopped in while my class was in P.E. trying to polka with bats. The gym teacher looked at my parents and said, "I bet you've done a polka or two in your day. Would you demonstrate?"

Well, my mom kicked off her shoes, and she and my dad polka-ed all over the gym - my mom was doing some fancy double-time step, and they literally traveled the entire floor over the course of the song- it was fantastic! I've been partial to the polka ever since.

It was even better than roller skating because not only did we have a non-threatening/stressful
way to hold hands (or at least A hand), we got to hold someone (non-contact fast dancing was
the norm).

On friday nights at six O'clock the Polka Hour would commence and we would all jump up and down to the music while my grandma tried desperately to teach us how to really polka. Those are very fond memories and seem to grow stronger as the decades distance me from that time...

I learned how to really dance the Polka when I was running for the State Senate back in the 1990's. There were a whole lot of Polish and Ukrainians in the district so there was serious polka going on at the summer fests...

And there is the Polka Hall of Fame located right here in Cleveland, Ohio. That other HOF gets the big press but the Polka Hall of Fame is a glorious place to be.
