Mezzo Soprano and Brooklyn native Julia Migenes, of Greek, Irish, and Puerto Rican descent to me was born to play Carmen on the big screen. Her voice may not have been the strongest of her era but its nonetheless a lovely first rate voice. Its her combination of wonderful singing talent, acting and dancing ability, along with her exotic beauty in the role of the gypsy girl that makes her my favorite in this film role. The camera loves her sensual playfulness and her sexuality on the screen opposite Placido Domingo in this 1984 film.
This is one of my favorite films for the music and its overpowering visual beauty. Directed by Francesco Rosi, it looks like a painting come to life its so visually stunning. This filmed version takes place in an actual town as opposed to the operatic stage and involves spoken dialog between musical pieces, as composer Bizet originally intended (the between-aria dialog was set to music after his death to conform to expected norms of opera).
