I worked at a theater part time at night and on the weekends for five years while I went to school and worked at another job during the day.

(29,414 posts)That may not seem like much, but in my field (drafting) it's a pretty good stretch (2006-2009.) Had the economy not imploded then, I'd probably still be working for them
Developmentally Disabled adults. Hated the elitist administration, loved the people.

(2,173 posts)It was also my favorite job. I was the head programmer for the database that tracked patients and their contacts. The patients were adults with acquired brain damage and the company served them well. I was in the corporate office so I didn't interact with the patients, but I did interact with the people who used the database. I actually had a real live office back then! Like with a door and everything. And I had two high school interns over the last summer I was there and I taught them Oracle and often worked from home sending in a FAX with their instructions for the day. They were both very talented and effective and the standing order was that if they finished the assignments early they were to study Oracle, Sun, and VMS so they would become even more proficient.
I miss that job. The company moved to Raleigh and I had no interest in relocating. It was also a short commute.

(11,916 posts)but I've moved around within - started out as technical secretary, moved to administrative assistant, the computer support, next to computer lab manager, now web design. Sooo, it wasn't 27 yrs of doing the exact same thing.

(21,925 posts)in "New Chinatown", near Los Angeles. I was the only non-Chinese in the office and my boss was a Chinese lady attorney. After working as a associate attorney in half a dozen law offices this is the job I stuck with the longest time by far. My boss was more than fair, kind, and considerate and not only treated me like a friend but like a family member. We even talk on the phone now that I've retired due to health reasons.
As far as I'm concerned, working for a lady was great, without the posturing, inflated egotism, or assholery I had experienced while working for male attorneys.
And as far as I'm concerned, working for the Chinese was wonderful. I practically lived in China all day long for all those years as the clients, fellow employees, and boss were all Chinese. I also made trips to mainland China to see clients. I was never treated so well as I was in that Chinese law office.

(56,828 posts)at a large insurance company from 1988 as a college intern, until 2001. I probably should have stuck around - I'd be going on 25 years there now, so would have a ton of vacation time built up.
(I got a pretty good raise to leave, but my salary's been all over the board since I left, so with an average annual increase of 3% and a couple of promotions in that 13 years, I'd likely be around the same salary-wise... I just don't have 25 years of service to put towards my vacation time.)
