Driving down a major five lane road with island median I saw one of those reminders of nature's cruelty that I wish I never had to see. Up ahead I could see something was going on because cars had slowed down in two of the three lanes. I saw something dark bounce up and back down again and by the time I got close enough, I saw one of those water birds flop on the median and try to get comfortable in a sitting position. Obviously, it had broken its leg. There was no where safe to park the car to get to it and this must have been developing for sometime because there were vultures overhead. I just went on my way, hoping for the best.
On the way back I looked for the vultures, and not seeing any I thought the little guy had made it across the next lane of cars to safety along the retention pond on the side. But, no. Its body was a flattened mass of red and feathers. There wasn't even anything left for the vultures.
Just, ugh.

(12,132 posts)We almost hit some birds on JYP coming back from lunch today - they were big tall grey birds with red on their heads - I thought they might be the cranes or herons we see around the ponds but they looked a little different than what I usually see (plus I'm not entirely sure what cranes and herons are lol...I'd get kicked out of the Audobon Society in a jiffy!).
6 lanes of traffic came to sudden stop while they moseyed around the road but I was pretty sure they made it to the other side. But who knows? It isn't a slow road. Speed limit 45 and most doing 55 and up.
That stuff just makes me ill. I don't like to see creatures hurt. I can watch the goriest movies all day long but real critters are another story.
Except roaches. Those bastards can rot in hell.

(30,947 posts)I keep Raid on hand all the time. Fortunately, I have not seen those big bastards for several years, but lately, I have seen some little ones, which get zapped immediately.

(46,733 posts)We had two mating pairs in the area, but they both seem to have disappeared. Never did see any babies.
But I did notice something I hadn't before. There was a flock of them walking across a major road. Yes, walking. One made it to the median and the others followed, imposing themselves on the traffic. I told my husband, "Now what fool bird did that flock decide to follow across the highway." And my husband mentions...
Never mind. It's a private joke.

(12,132 posts)I like how they walk around like they own the place.
I reckon at one time they did.
