(inspired by Orlando vs. Miami thread)
I've been to both but never lived in either. I was only in SD for a few hours, went to the beachside at La Jolla.
Been to LA a few times, reminds me very strongly of an Orlando on steroids.

(15,740 posts)I like LA -- lots of things to do and places to go.
But I love SD -- it's a big city that doesn't seem that big (topology has a lot to do with it).

(426 posts)I grew up there, in the 50's and 60's. My niece thinks of Phoenix as LA without the beach! San Diego? Kind of meh, to me. Too many rethugs.

(43,182 posts)Actually, I've never been to either but I wouldn't mind visiting both, just to see what they are all about.
From all I've seen, the beaches look pretty but I hear the water is bitterly cold. And what fun is going to the beach if you can't go in the water?
Climate sounds warm, which is good, but a little dry, which I imagine keeps things a bit on the brownish side.
When I go, I wouldn't mind seeing the San Diego Zoo or Dodger Stadium. I'd love to catch a taping of Conan, too. And I'd love to drive by all the houses that were used as exteriors of all my favorite TV shows. (I've had a strange fascination of googling the locations where houses in sitcoms and movies are actually located, and then going onto Google Earth and seeing them on there. I always wonder about the families who live in those houses. Do they know?)

(30,947 posts)I lived in Los Angeles and went to the beaches there and that is where the water is bitterly cold.
I have lived in both cities and the water in the Pacific Ocean is a hell of a lot colder than the Atlantic Ocean.

(23,340 posts)LA is a major city, San Diego is not. Both are overpriced, both have great climates, both have access to great beaches, LA has a lot more variety and culture. San Diego is more Republican.
Neither is really a bad place to live.

(15,740 posts)The surrounding communities in the county do tend Republican, though. Darrell Issa and Duncan Hunter Jr. are their elected representatives.

(21,925 posts)Most of L.A. is downright hideous and generally orients itself around which freeway you live next to. The San Diego area is one I find more pleasant on the eyes. However I prefer the average person I've met in the L.A. area next to the people you typically run into in San Diego. Yes there are good and bad everywhere. Yes there are liberals and conservatives everywhere. But since you call for an opinion about the the two places in general, I think it's true that San Diegans are more likely to be conservative and arrogant about where they live rather than Los Angeles denizens. I think there are plenty of places better to live in and I'm hoping to make it out of here soon after living here about 40 of my 63 years.

(35,441 posts)You have this great weather year round, and they made the city for cars, not people. What's the point of having nice weather when you just sit in your car all day long.

(31,392 posts)Every time I went back to visit was happy to no longer be living there.
Traffic is insane. Too many people.
Very happy living in my progressive university town of Chapel Hill, NC, population 50,000.
Rest of NC? Eh, especially since Repubs have taken over the state. Beaches are MUCH better than L.A. or SD--water is warmer--from May to September.
But SD has too many Repubs and L.A. has too much traffic. And housing prices? Sheesh.

(20,776 posts)Have lived in Santa Barbara and in Huntington Beach, but never lived in LA. I have always wanted to visit San Diego, and hope to some day soon. But, I have to say.. I really had a lot of fun in Los Angeles.. Been to Dodger, and Kings games. Have some really fond memories of Los Angeles and have some great friends who live there.
For now, I will pick LA ..until I get the chance to check out San Diego.

(28,866 posts)They're pretty close to each other.
It's really a false choice unless for some reason you're "forced" to live near one or the other. Both seem quite good in their own way. I really like LA but SD seemed nice too from what I saw.

(944 posts)Why not San Juan Capistrano, or San Clemente.
I'm afraid republicans are everywhere.
