(26,268 posts)According to my great-aunt, they spoke Welsh in their home when she was young. I'm about to start work on a family tree. I'm curious how close I've been to the family origin area, during my visits to Wales.

(24,931 posts)My great grandparents emigrated to the Hyde Park area of Scranton from Port Talbot in South Wales. Hyde Park was Welsh-speaking when my grandmother was growing up.

(26,268 posts)My Dad's cousin did a tree, years ago, but it's been lost. I know that by the time they emigrated they were coal miners, so I'm guessing the South. They ended up in Maryland but moved to Michigan because my grandfather didn't want his sons to have to go into the mines, or to have to work in them any longer, himself.
Funny thing is, my affinity is for the North so I've always wondered if that's where the family originated, and then moved south for the work. Hopefully I will be able to find out. I always spend my time visiting and seeing the North - Blaenau Ffestiniog, Betws-y-Coed, LLandudno, and, of couse Fflint. (Coincidence that I now live in Flint, MI? Hmmmmm.) I'm a big believer in atavistic DNA so who knows.
