My son said it reminded him of the Hispanic version of To Kill a Mockingbird.

(37,457 posts)from what little I know, I think he's on the mark. I just looked at the wiki for TKAMB and it seems to bear him out very well. This movie is apparently only released on a limited basis but well worth seeing I think.

Nah, I'm always happy to hear people bragging on their kids.

(2,682 posts)and while I agree that it is an interesting view of Hispanic life in the 40's New Mexico, I don't see it compared with To Kill a Mockingbird. The one theme I found repeated over and over not in TKAM was Catholic dogma. I understand the church played a large part in the lives of the people, but as a movie-goer, I would have been satisfied with more activities of the church and how those activities played a role in their lives and less explanation of religious theory. The movie was an interesting view of the lack of respect of the Catholic population for a Native American healer, to the extent of labeling her a witch. Yes, it is worth seeing, but be advised that it is heavily religious.
