16. I love MO, too, but I HATE the idea of political dynasties, no matter

which party. We are not supposed to have an inherited royalty or nobility. Yeah, I know it works that way anyway, but it should not. I don't particularly want Chelsea or Malia to be president someday, either.

It's not as though we don't have a wealth of excellent Democrats to run for all of these elected positions, so why should we keep running people from the same families?

How about Elizabeth Warren, Alan Grayson, or any of the other truly progressive voices in the House or Senate?

I think Ted Kennedy became a great senator when he accepted that his role was to do good in the senate.

The idea that a person has to have the "boss" job is just egotism.

I think Kerry will be a good SoS, but his investigative work in the Senate was, I think, too important to abandon just to be more historically "notable." I wish he'd stayed in the Senate.

If we regain the House, I think Pelosi will be majority leader again--an appropriate, essential job. Fortunately, she doesn't think being president is the only role big enough for her.

Amy Carter can do good work without being president. Besides, to become president, one must compromise to a horrible degree.

I think Obama is much more liberal than he seems to be, but he is hogtied by the compromises one makes to run for and win the presidency. I hate to see all our best activists coopted.

But even beyond that, I hate the idea of political dynasties, and I detest the idea of celebrity worship, which is also part of the notion that because someone is famous, they should be president. I have actually seen DUers suggest Oprah would be a great Dem candidate!

Ashley Judd would make a great senator, not because she is famous, but because she has a master's degree in a relevant area of study from a top educational institute as well as a history of activism. A mere history of activism by itself doesn't necessarily qualify a person. If it did, most of us would be suitable candidates. But the truth is that most of us would be babes in the woods in such a situation.

The only advantage to celebrity candidates is the leg up on name recognition they have.

But I still hate the idea of "ruling dynasties."

Ashley Judd does have name recognition and if anything, they'll have to tone down her beauty, to avoid jealousy issues, but she is a fine candidate based on her qualifications, intellectual capacity and activism. I really want her to run an to kick Mitch McConnell to the curb.

so why would you want Elizabeth Warren to leave the Senate seat she is the best person in the world for assuming she can bring about what she wants to do?

Who would replace her?
She would run for 3 years and be seen as totally political instead of issue oriented, therefore
she would not achieve.
(And if she don't achieve, what would she campaign on?)

Saying a wife or husband of a president is part of a dynasty is insulting to that person and saying they are not an individual. (Same with children.) Hillary is going to be way to the left of Bill, because the times are different, and it will be the continuation of President Obama.
I do hope followed in 2024 and 2028 by President Michelle Obama, with President Obama by then being Chief Justice of the USA(having been appointed in 2018 by President Clinton and following in the footsteps of President Taft.

Did you feel that way about dynasties with JFK or RFK? (because their father was a person who wanted to be President.

Did you feel that way about Al Gore? His father was a very important senator.

Did you feel that way about FDR? After all, before him, there was relative Teddy R.

Did you feel that way about John Quincy Adams?

30. Truthfully, I hope EW stays in the Senate, and I'd love to

see Grayson in the Senate, too. As one of a gazillion House reps in a Repub controlled House, he has too little impact.

BUT I would also rather see some new and properly fierce progressive figures run for top spots than see the children or wives of our successful pols (OR theirs!) ride their name into office. That is why I would rather see EW as a candidate than MO or AC. I would still prefer for EW to kick butt and take names in the Senate, though!

Frankly, I feel that "inherited" power is always dangerous to democracy and freedom. I also feel that the egotistic need to be president or nothing also depletes the ranks of our best soldiers on the ground.

Kerry could have been the new Teddy "Lion of the Senate." He had the history, the gravitas, the integrity. Sure, he will be an excellent SoS, but it is a loss nonetheless.

32. Just to be clearer--I don't object to the idea that the

spouses and kids of presidents having political careers--or even to celebrities doing so. But I am repelled by the idea that with no prior polotical experience or evident expertise they should jump to the head of the line and become president, which is what the idea of MO or Chelsea or Oprah for president is.

If MO does want to be pres someday--which I sincerely doubt!--let her run for lower offices first and rack up political accomplishments to justify a candidacy for that office. Same goes for anyone else. Hillary was a Senator and an extremely accomplishef SoS. She probably won't run in 2016, and her age would be a factor if she did. But if any FLOTUS has earned a shot at that job on her own merits, it is Hillary.

Hubby had a hard time convincing her that he should run. She absolutely did not want that disruption and stress for her family. And considering the incredible number of death threats they get, the endless attacks, and the undiluted racism they have been subjected to, why would she want to put herself or her girls through that again? Hillary always had national political ambitions, but there is no indication that Michelle ever did.

She has made a great sacrifice for this country--as has her husband. I know there are perks to being POTUS & FLOTUS, but my guess is that they both feel the sacrifice quite a lot, her especially, and that they committed to it because they really did feel they needed to step up and help fix a broken country. In fact, I am reminded of Howard Dean, who entered national politics for just that reason, not because of any great egotistical need to be the big guy.

We should be filling the political pipeline with promising progressives at all levels, not just recycling the same small handful of people. One reason the Repubs do well (aside from the endless rich jerk money that props them up) is that they field candidates for local and state elections--and they get out and vote in those elections, while Dems tend to show up mainly during presidential elections.
