Id never heard it before, the glorious tune I am Australian. It was performed here in 1994 by the legendary Australian 60s folk group The Seekers on the occasion of the AFL Grand Final match of Australian rules football (I assume its sort of their Superbowl and a major cultural event like ours). And The Seekers with the solid gold voice of Judith Durham do an equally stupendous rendition of Waltzing Matilda.

(2,560 posts)It's held on the last Saturday in September at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). It's pretty much a sacred date. The other sporting sacred date is the first Tuesday in November when the whole nation comes to a halt to watch the Melbourne Cup (think Kentucky Derby).
If anyone goes to Australia, I'd advise going to the MCG when two of the Melbourne-based teams are playing. Sitting in a crowd of 80,000+ is quite an experience. Or, in the summer months, go and watch test cricket at the same venue.

(7,954 posts)What a class act. She (and the rest of the group) are my definition of "national treasure".

(21,925 posts)They are an Aussie national treasure, apparently: five 45 singles to make it into the top ten back in the 60s, four gold records, 60 million records sold worldwide. Judith Durham was a classically trained singer and pianist singing jazz tunes when she was invited to join the folk group in 1962. Im still in love with her magic voice after all these years. Heres my favorite Seekers tune and a gospel tune made famous by another folk group The Weavers.
