Anyone ever see this movie spoof of Tricky Dick and Spiro Agnew?
It was entitled Another Nice Mess (taking its name from the Laurel and Hardy film Another Fine Mess). Made in 1972 while Nixon and Agnew were still in office, the film absolutely ridicules them. It stars comedy impersonator Rich Little imitating Nixon while comedian Herb Voland plays Agnew. To further complicate things, the Nixon character acts just like Oliver Hardy while the Agnew character acts like Stan Laurel. The screenplay was written by Bob Einstein (Super Dave Osborne) who was the main writer for the Smothers Bros. Show and it features Steve Martin in his very first film (a brief appearance as a long haired hippie). Ive been looking for this film for awhile and I just noticed its now complete on youtube. I saw this in the theater in 1972 and laughed my head off. Unfortunately it disappeared from the theaters almost overnight and the rumor was that the Nixon administration leaned on the distributor to pull it. The film is out of print and very hard to find. I wouldnt be surprised, as there are fart scenes and a scene where Nixon and Agnew do reefer and they use colorful language like shit. This is not high-class comedy and is almost all over the top slapstick. It's sometimes not very good. But youve got to admire the audacity in making a film that made an absolute laughing stock out of a sitting President. This film would be a cult classic except for the fact that it's almost disppeared and few people have ever seen it. I would have liked to see something done like this about George Bush. The scene where Rich Little as Nixon looks in the mirror while shaving and shakes his jowels with an upturned nose is hilarious.
Here's the complete film now on Youtube.
