(21,020 posts)Hell...I was married to the guy!
OK, not really.
But my second husband could have been his twin brother. No kidding.
The resemblance was uncanny
Anyway, I did used to watch Mitch Miller as a kid. Loved those good old sing alongs.

(21,925 posts)He was really caught up in the folk music craze (not that Mitch Miller featured mainly folk music) and thought that singing along to that show would improve his singing voice for an eventual folk music career. I watched Mitch Miller but only occasionally as there was some show on another channel that I liked more, although I don't remember which one it was now. My mom and dad didn't like how the music on Mitch Miller was deeply drowning in reverb which they thought made it sound too loud. I'm sure when I took up the electric guitar and became a fan of Jimi Hendrix a few years later, their idea of loudness underwent a massive revision.

(2,560 posts)My parents used to enjoy him.
I thought his show was ok, good in parts. But not really my scene.

(716 posts)He also didn't look at all like the individual in the clips.

(48,217 posts)His show was one of the earliest ones to have an African-American, Leslie Uggams, appearing as a regular.
I was amazed to learn that Miller lived to be 99 years old and died only a couple of years ago.

(12,154 posts)I about fell off my chair when I saw him there singing away. I didn't know he was a Mitch Miller singer!

(21,925 posts)for when he moved to the network to take over the Tonight Show in fall, 1962. Ever see Johnny's show with Ed MacMahon "Do you trust your wife" (later renamed "Who do you trust" that he did on afternoon TV in the late 50s early 60s? It was absolutely hilarious and involved the same kind of craziness he incorporated into the Tonight Show.

(12,154 posts)that maybe he was making a special guest appearance on Sing Along with Mitch. I'll bet you're right, that it was a way to help make his face known for his upcoming role as Jack Paar's replacement. (I never did get over thinking of Johnny as the new guy. )
I didn't watch game shows often, but I think I saw Do You Trust Your Wife a time or two. Johnny was good at hosting that show too. Thanks for posting the video.

(3,445 posts)He's in that first video, and probably the others as well (I didn't watch them, sorry). He originally sang in NYC clubs in a foursome called The Top Hats, but he quit the club gigs when he started working for Mitch.
My favorite story of his was when they were shooting a commercial for Fresca which called for falling snow. They had to shoot it several times, which meant that after every take they had to totally clean up the stage, including getting all the snow out of the singers' hair and off their clothes. He said it took forever.
He was a really sweet man, and I was absolutely awestruck by the fact that my voice teacher had sung in clubs and on TV. Oh, the good old days....
