(716 posts)There's a very good point made in the article - if anyone famous had been on the ship they would have pulled out all the stops for the search. Why do they have to wait until 2 p.m. to announce their decision on the recovery effort? Those families need whatever closure is possible.

(716 posts)Perhaps I missed it being discussed, but why were they out in that weather to begin with (other than the obvious answer of "to catch fish" ? I mean with all of the weather tracking at our fingertips why did they risk that area? I in no way intend to belittle the tragedy but that issue has just been gnawing at me.

(59,440 posts)Obviously not fast enough. Other boats made it back. When George talked to Joel, the weather hadn't hit. An hour later, they called him back saying they were in trouble. Right after that they made the distress call.

(716 posts)I read that the wind was hurricane force, but that's different from how fast a storm moves. I'm not familiar with the region. Are there any islands in the vicinity or is it just open sea?

(59,440 posts)It's a dangerous area and they know the risks. I take into account that they were all under 30, except for one who was 31 or 32. The captain was only 21, but my BIL captained his own boat at the age. Still, they were young.

(14,881 posts)I live on a ridge just 3 miles inland midcoast Maine, just across the water from Nova Scotia. There may be islands in that area, but the water is quite cold this time of year. Not as cold as some years past, but we've had plenty of below zero weather to bring it way down.
The winds were terrifying, nonstop, near hurricane force with huge gusts. I had to block the main door to my barn, which was blowing and slamming terribly even though it was on the protected side and the back door was frozen completely shut. My filly was in the aisle and refused to go into her stall, so I put her hay in the aisle with her. Still, she wouldn't eat. Noise had her in a panic, even though she's lived in this barn for 6 1/2 years.
I can only imagine how it was out on open water. I work right on a harbor and lesser winds leave us doubled over and struggling to get across the parking lot.
How sad for the crew and their families...

"I think he's in that boat."
