(12,008 posts)Academia is the most foul hell-hole of employment there is, ruled over by at least minor gods.

(17,742 posts)I can imagine: one has Google Alerts send them an email anytime a new Google entry shows their name used in a link. And DU posts get onto Google lists really really quickly.
Then, following the link, finds the post, finds it funny and decides to register to reply.
Or, could be someone's idea of a joke.
Either way, it is funny.

(3 posts)Your description of what happened is exactly right. I have the virtue of an unusual name, so I can readily keep tabs on my internet reputation -- a precaution I started when my involvement in politics started catching me flack from a right-wing student who thought I was the poster-child for the academic conspiracy the brainwash the youth of America. Anyhow, if you doubt my authenticity, it is easy enough to go to the Gustavus web site, find the email address for the department chair, and send him (me) a request for confirmation.
By the way, our tradition of having a "supreme chairbeing" dates back at least into the 1980s. (I was hired in 1990, so I don't really know how far back it goes.) I just checked and the earliest trace of it I can find on the internet is from 2004, but that's just a function of what's online. We make a particular point of using the title when hiring, so that candidates know what sort of department we are. For a few years we were prevented from doing that by a humorless administrator, but thankfully that dark period has passed.
Supremely yours, -max

(17,742 posts)Why did it take you this long to find us!?!?!?
Welcome to DU!! What a great story you will have in the coming years when there are posts about "how I found DU."

(3 posts)I guess I was vaguely aware of DU's existence, but I didn't feel any compelling need to join. Without meaning any offense to all of you fine DUers, my life was already pretty full. Besides, although this may be a bit hard to believe under the circumstances, I'm actually a pretty shy guy.

(17,742 posts)Many of us are shy. And, many of us *used* to also have pretty full lives. I mean, until we found DU and then... well... ahem... errrr... Oh never mind.
Let's just say that once you put your toe in, it's kind of hard to resist taking the plunge.
