While brainstorming, it was suggested that they give Columbo a younger partner.
.
Instead, they gave him a dog -- the most lethargic basset hound you could imagine.
Columbo rescued him from a pound and was frequently seen on the show "walking"
him (I don't think you ever saw the dog walk -- it was made to appear that Columbo
had to actually CARRY him everywhere).
.

.
Columbo tried to name him once. "Beethoven". The dog didn't like it, so he gave up
on a name for him.
.
He sent him to obedience school once, but the dog was kicked out. The "dean" of
the school told Columbo that the dog was "demoralizing" all the other dogs in the
class.

Then she thought he was dressed the way he was because he was working undercover.

The case had to wait. I thought the idea of a private eye who looked like he could barely run 50 feet or do a push up was interesting. I think I remember hearing that actor William Conrad wasn't allowed to lose weight in the role as being overweight was so much a part of the character which was cool.
