(60,015 posts)essentially you heat milk to 180 degrees, hold it there for a couple of minutes (we use 2%) - cool it down to 115 or so (put the pan in a sink with cold water). Take 1 small container of commercial plain yogurt (we like the greek stuff - Chalabi or something like that) and put it in a bowl, whisk it, then add some of the milk - whisk until combined, then pour that into the rest of the milk in the pan and whisk well. Our maker uses 7 7 ounce jars - fill them most of the way, put them into the warmer, cover it and let it go 8-10 hours. I had friend that just wrapped them in a blanket and left them for 12 hours or so - it sets up just like yogurt - cover and refrigerate.
It is probably less expensive, certainly better tasting....
