One war was enough to watch them go through.

I suppose Sybil got pregnant rather soon after she and Tom (did I just say Tom? I meant... the driver, lol) married, so still early 20s I would guess?

Didn't the UK draft women in WWII--not into combat, but something to help the war effort?

I don't remember but I am pretty sure in the U.S. as well. Probably cargo planes.

I don't know all the details, but women over 18 (I believe mothers were exempt) had to register for medical, factory or farm work (the land girls) or the armed forces. That's how the then Princess Elizabeth became an Army mechanic.

Tom Branson and Sybil returned from Ireland because of Tom's participation in the Irish War of Independence, which lasted from 1919 until the end of 1921, when the treaty was signed, following a truce in mid-1921. We already know from the earlier New Year's episode that 1919 has come and gone, as the Dowager Countess commented she couldn't believe it was 1920, the start of a new decade. So that leaves the timeframe from 1920-21.
