(15,577 posts)poor Bill gets a bad rap for that play. He was a good player and wasn't responsible for the ultimate result.........

(35,699 posts)I sort of remember some discussion about whether it was partially the manager's fault for not pulling him for a better defensive player who was not playing hurt.

(32,086 posts)I am just glad it happened when he was Red Sox, and not while he was a Cub. The Cubs have enough embarrassing shit hanging over them as it is.

(21,484 posts)I meant no offense to anyone, least of all to Buckner himself, in bringing this up. I was merely curious. I couldn't remember if this happened in the penultimate game and I figured it would be easier to get my answer here than on Google.
Sorry.

(42,770 posts)them an ugly name....like my sister who yells "Stoop!" at the TV (short for stupid) haha
I just can't imagine if it was me, missing an important catch, and having to relive that in my head and having all the fans hate me though.

(35,699 posts)While failing to recognize how many games the Red Sox won with home runs in that exact same spot. Somehow it was ok for Red Sox players to get cheap home runs but not for Bucky Dent. And also the fact that the Sox lost a chance to tie the game with poor base running in the ninth by Rick Burlson, who was fooled by Lou Pinella acting as if he was going to catch a ball which he had lost in the sun.

(1,186 posts)Where the fuck was Dave Stapleton? Buckner should have never been out there to begin with. Stapleton had been used all season as a late inning defensive replacement for Buckner. Fucking McNamara!

(35,699 posts)It seems he was clearly not able to move quickly enough to play that position well. As I recall he was really stiff and awkward out there.

(43,182 posts)Cubs-Marlins.
Cubs were up 3 games to 2 going into Game 6. Going into the 8th inning, the Cubs were winning the game 3-0, and they were within 5 outs of going to their first World Series since 1945. With one out, Marlins 2nd baseman Luis Castillo hit a foul ball down the left field line. Cubs left fielder Moises Alou was tracking the ball as he reached the stands, and as he reached up to attempt to catch it, Cubs fan Steve Bartman (along with several other fans, mind you) reached in to grab it. It's still debated whether or not he actually reached into the field of play (a la Jeffrey Maier), but Alou immediately claimed fan interference.
There was no interference call, however, and Castillo walked, setting off an eight run rally by the Marlins. However, that rally could still have been avoided had Cubs shortstop Alex Gonzalez not muffed a ground ball that could have been an inning ending double play.
The Marlins won that game 8-3, and then won Game 7, 9-6.
In all honesty, Cubs fans made major asses out of themselves, screaming and chanting obscenities and hurling items at Bartman, and then subsequently making death threats towards him, who had to be snuck out of the stadium by security for his own protection. After watching the "Catching Hell" documentary, I was left glad that the Cubs still haven't won a World Series given their fans' atrocious behavior that night.
That, and as a Marlins fan, I was glad to see the Fish make an incredible comeback that series. Their performance in that series often gets overshadowed by the Bartman story.

(2,052 posts)but cut us some slack. It had been like 95 years or so...
That documentary was well done but very difficult to watch. the Cubs should have never even been in that situation but it was so easy to blame him.
Game 7 was almost as bad if I remember correctly. Isn't that the game your guys jumped all over us then we came back with a homer by Kerry Wood? Then it was all over - 104 years and counting. Damn goat.
