I posted this in the Baseball group expecting to be PPR'd

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1206317

I want to reconfigure MLB as follows:

1) 100 Game season starting at the same time and ending at roughly the end of July.
2) All Star Game becomes a double-header, and is played at the end of the season. In a new twist, in game 1, the baseball players vote a normal sized roster of non-pitchers, and select two starters and 4 relievers for each team; for game 2 the fans pick two managers, who then pick teams "playground style" from those who weren't picked for game 1.

3) 24 team playoff starts. It's the best 24 teams with no regard to which league they are in. Everyone plays a 7-game series, and each series should take about 10 days
-first series is the 9-24 seeds
-second series is seeds 1-8 versus the winners of the first series
-third series is the remaining 8 teams
-fourth series is the remaining four teams
-fifth series is the World Series. It's no longer AL v. NL -- it''s the two best teams left standing. Let's do this in 9 games.

Even given that the playoffs wouldn't start until 8/10, that should get the entire baseball season done by the first week of October. Far fewer meaningless games are played August-September, and the World Series is done before everyone's interest is fully invested in college football or the NFL.

Why didn't this cause indignant rioting?

They won't riot. They will simply send Peter Gammons, Bob Costas, and George Will over to your house to drone ON and ON and ON

They thought I was talking about the NHL playoffs.

The Union will never agree to 154 games, never mind 100 when all cumulative stats are based on 162 game seasons now.

And letting almost everyone in to the post season would suck. The great thing about baseball is the season meant something (the only meaningless games involve the bottom feeders) because only a few got in, and they are doing whatever they can to add more undeserving teams every year. You can't complain after 162 games you weren't given a fair shot to show you belong in the post season.

It doesn't suck in the NBA or NHL

The Union will never agree to 154 games

It would be an ugly CBA, I agree

(N)ever mind 100 when all cumulative stats are based on 162 game seasons now.

The stats became meaningless during the steroid era anyway, so now would be as good as time as any to make such a switch.

First, look how much excitement adding the extra division and the wild-card has added to the game. More people can get excited about their team being in post season play. Second, just as with the NBA and NHL, essentially you end up with two seasons. The difference is that in the playoff season, every game matters. Meanwhile, the Royals don't play the Indians in front of 6,500 fans.

As it stands now, by the time the pennant races conclude, 90% of America is fixated on college football and the NFL. If MLB wants to remain relevant, they need to convert to a playoff structure that is more inclusive, and conclude the season about three weeks sooner.

I don't need my team to make the playoffs because they dumbed it down for them.

'Nuff said.
