(27,985 posts)OMG, I almost fell off my chair! I have my doggy over for a visit for the first time since my split. He's staying for three days. But he doesn't need to figure it out, as my patter with him is "Who da good boy? YOU da good boy!!!" as he just about wags his butt off.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Split ups are tough on the pets too.
edited to add that I checked and see you're female and so I took out the 'good boyz' reference.
tavalon
(27,985 posts)I didn't get the kid I raised from when he was six and he's almost 18 (severe autism so he will never be independent) and I moved onto a barge which is not the best for a standard poodle so I left him behind and it's been balm to my soul to have had my kiddo on Friday and my dog on the rest of the weekend into Tuesday. We've been having fun.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Your poodle would probably love living on your barge!
My toy poodle used to take showers with me and she was the one who would insist on being brought into the shower.
How does your kid like the barge? You never know how being on water will affect people. My nephew loved our boat so much (when I was married) that he's worked for years on a barge on the Mississippi.
tavalon
(27,985 posts)He hates it. But he spent the first seven years of his life as a deaf service dog to a shut in, so he has a number of personality quirks. He's willing to be on it since I'm here but if he could talk, I'm sure I'd get an earful.
Funny thing about my kiddo, since he's autistic, he can be as inscrutable as my dog. But, after a few weeks of coming here, he seems to be happy coming here and when he doesn't want to be somewhere, one is made aware, loudly. Before I moved here, we had been coming to this very barge as a family, on July 4th, to watch fireworks, so he had been here at least 7 times before. I think that helps.

(2,569 posts)A lady and I once shared our home with a lynx. He was melanistic and probably rejected by his mother. The little goof showed up on our porch one night and took over our home and hearts. At first we thought he was just a half-grown black Manx kitten, and named him Panther Pushy Cat. But he just kept GROWING. When we took him for shots and neutering, the vet set us straight as to just what we had. He grew to be an enormous beast, utterly devoted to the two of us. His paws were like boxing mitts...every bit as big as the palms of my hands. Strangely, he was agorophobic and hated the out of doors, wouldn't set paw outside unless he was on a harness and leash with his humans on the other end! When he was in the sunlight, we could see his spots and stripes against the black fur. Alas, he was a short-lived, much loved fellow, leaving this world at the too-soon age of five. I'm told that's often the case with melanistic and albino animals.
