The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just filled in my 6th grade son on the OJ Simpson trial.
My husband was summoned for jury duty today (haven't heard from him since this am) and my son just got home from school and was asking about being a juror. My husband pisses me off because he has quite a few reasons for not serving on a jury (I got excused for answering I believe some police can lie on a robbery case) but he likes serving.
GA can summon you as much as they want in a year unlike other states (or at least twice because he served on 2 trials in less than a year).
One was a drug charge that he and the others found the woman not guilty---cops had no legit reason for pulling her over, it wasn't her car but they found coke under the seat. Not that I think all cops suck but I was happy with the outcome when he told me the whole case. Other trial was a land dispute.
Sorry, I digress. I was explaining about how it's supposed to be a jury of "your peers" but in the OJ case it was not so. I really don't want to battle anyone who thinks he's innocent; been there done that and it's a waste of my time and theirs.
I loved reading Dominick Dunne's monthly articles on the case in Vanity Fair as he was on the inside. I forget which atty it was but he ran into him in the bathroom (might have been Barry Scheck) and he told him he felt bad for the Goldman family (this was before the verdict).
My son finally got tired of my ranting as he wanted to play Minecraft but I said it was the considered the trial the century and sparked so many emotions throughout the country. Then I said only one lawyer came out and said he thought he was guilty (Kardashian--he said he had a real problem with the blood evidence) and showed him the video of the verdict--Kardashian looked shocked while OJ smirked.
Told him he was found guilty in civil court and now he's in jail for something else. As for the rest of the characters involved, at least Scheck is representing falsley imprisoned people now with DNA (worked for WM3).
I agree the prosecution botched the case, but money, "good lawyers", Mark Furhman and a bunch of other shit was involved.
My man just called; he's on his way home but got picked. WTF?

(8,556 posts)Really great account of the trial. Toobin was there the whole time and he's pretty fair, so it's a great read.

What's worse---representing OJ or spawning those girls. Yuck.

(21,046 posts)Then I remembered that Robert Kardashian was one of OJ's lawyers.
Guess his brains didn't get passed on........
That trial is why the GNP probably dropped for 1995. Lots of people were riveted to a very long trial.
And they didn't charge Al Cowlings, the driver of the white Bronco, with aiding an accused felon's escape? Normal people get charged with conspiracy for stuff like that. But he's a rich football player.

I got called for the first week of Feb. Good thing is I can't get called for another three years.

(5,909 posts)I think it was the first major trial to be televised, but I could be wrong.
Sometimes it was really boring or I just got so tired of it I would turn it off.
It went on forever--I think 8 or 9 months, then just 2 days of deliberations and it was over.

(24,931 posts)I just couldn't be bothered. It seemed odd that they televised trials in CA. Here in MN we still use sketch artists.
