A Christmas Story: The cast members then and now

Tonight at 8 p.m. cable television channel TBS begins airing its annual 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story. The beloved tale of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his Red Ryder BB Gun will air 12 times in a row through Christmas evening.

Would you actually want to watch the movie a dozen times? Probably not. But keeping it on the TV might serve as a nice backdrop to your holiday festivities…certainly more entertaining than cousin Eddie’s stories.

And for many families, sitting around the TV and watching this 1983 movie, based on writings by humorist Jean Shepherd, has become a tradition. People love the film because it gives a sense of realism to the holidays and celebrates the oddities of families and people.

In the Parker Family, there’s Ralphie whose desperation for a BB Gun is feverish, his father who famously receives an “Italian” leg lamp (“fragilé”) in the mail, and his mother who tells Ralphie’s brother to eat like a piggy.

He has a cameo in the film where he tells Ralphie where the beginning of the line to see Santa Claus is.
