2. Kind of a music snob here, but here are my thoughts

My caveats - I love alternative rock (current faves Arcade Fire, The Nationals, Fleet Foxes) - Beatles (not the Stones so much) - not much for classic rock, love the Talking Heads....but more recently am in a jazz and classical phase (I oscillate through phases/genres).

Tracy Chapman - very significant
Phish - most significant jam band since the Allmans
Nirvana of course
Traveling Wilburys due to the status of its members, I suppose (I wasn't a big fan)
Morrissey maybe - status in the alternative music movement

not hall of fame material, but great music

Edie Brickell (when she was with the New Bohemians - two great releases)
Pale Saints (one of the best/most underrated Shoegazer band - In Ribbons is amazing)

Having been a fan since pretty much their inception, it was only 2 years ago I finally got to see Pestilence live. One the best live shows ever - even though it wasn't with Martin Van Drunen on vox - that's OK though, I got to see him with both Asphyx and Hail of Bullets.

Cynic only had 1 album up until a couple years ago though so, even though they were huge influences with that one album for 2 decades of metal musicians, I doubt they were heard of outside of that community.

And Gorilla Biscuits are just plain fun.

edit to add: Fun fact re: Cynic - to make a living and stay connected to music (because death metal is very hard to pay bills with), Cynic singer and guitarist, Paul Masvidal, moved to Hollywood for a while and played sound effects for TV shows. For one, those little guitar squeal bumpers between scenes on That 70's Show where him.

Less fun, but also a fact, Paul wears those shoes with the individual toes on stage - at least, he did when I saw him with Cynic a while back.

Another edit because I must have missed him: I think Danzig should get in but not for his solo work which is boring to me but not terrible. He should get in for his work in the Misfits.

4. Acid Reign . . . damn.

Old thrash band from Britain, most of their members merged with the great Lee Dorrian to form Cathedral. Memorable times back in the late 80s.

Yeah, you want to know what metal band I would put in to shake things up - Napalm Death. How giant was their influence on the world of modern metal? They're still going to this day despite not one original member.

I remember seeing TAD open for Primus at the Babylon A Go Go in Cleveland's Ohio City area (don't look for the club, it's no longer there). The place was so goddamned packed, if you wanted to go to the bathroom, you were missing a song and a half. Although (thanks to hookups in college radio back then) we knew about Tad's heavy sound going in, they turned a lot of heads that night.

Who gets in based ON that list? The safe bets are likely Nirvana, Phish and Morrissey (not really a fan of any of them). Surprised The Smiths aren't in already. Dark horse would be Living Colour, although they don't have much of a legacy beyond their first two albums. Pair them with a bunch of people still waiting, like Kiss, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Moody Blues and Deep Purple.

28. I just saw Napalm Death a week and a half ago

My 4th time to see them and they were just as great as when I first saw them on the Harmony Corruption tour. I wish I could have seen them when Lee was still there - I love Barney but I would have liked a shot at a Lee Dorrian song or two...

Lee Dorrian also contributed a song to Dave Grohl's Probot project - I think it's the best one on the record.

13. I don't understand the appeal of Deep Purple

Sure they had a few hits back in the late 60s but not seeing why that should put them in the R&RHOF. Rush not only has been putting out great albums since the 70s but they are still putting out great albums.

If Deep Purple toured today they'd maybe fill up a medium size venue that holds 3k-5k people. Rush still tours the larger arenas, they had a near sell out at Wells Fargo just a month ago.

People say that DP was one of the bands that helped build up Hard Rock/Heavy metal but personally I find them 2nd rate compared to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

In the cases of Styx and Journey, each band had points where they had two lead singers. I don't give a rats ass that people deem them "corporate rock" or think their lyrics are cheezeball. The voice is an instrument and singing is a craft. The fact that people don't appreciate the notes that a singer hits in the same way that they appreciate a great guitar solo. Try going to a karaoke bar and singing a Steve Perry song in the right octave. Most likely (unless you're a really gifted singer) it will sound a lot like a mediocre guitarist picking up an axe and trying to play like Eddie Van Halen.

I always say that Tom Scholz is the reason I like Boston. Brad Delp is the reason I LOVE Boston. The second I heard those epic high notes on More Than A Feeling is when I decided that I wanted to be a singer. Delp was one of the finest vocalists there is.

But yea, you're right Scholz probably wouldn't show up. It's also interesting to consider who they would actually induct. Scholz and Delp were technically the only ones signed to the label. So do they just induct those two, or Barry Goudreau, Sib Hashian, and some others as well.
