Happy Anniversary to Abbott - it was 10 years ago that I found him abandoned outside my apartment

He's sitting here on my lap while I post this. He definately was pre-owned and someone probably moved out of the apartment and just tossed the cat out with the garbage. I felt bad because he was so friendly but out there in the freezing rain so I lured him in with cheese slice and canned tuna.

He never left after that.

At first I wanted to call him Eleanor or Ellie after Eleanor Roosevelt but then I saw him licking his lil pee-pee and realized that she was a he. At the time I was reading the biography of Abby Hoffman so I called him Abby. But he was such a naughty cat and I didn't want to associated Abby with when I was angry so I kept yelling ABBOTT. So he ended up becoming Abbott - he responds better to that if he decides he wants to respond.

He was a big cat. 14lbs when I found him and once almost up to 17lbs but we slimmed him back down to 15lbs. But even at 15lb he was all cat, he was not a 'fat cat' just really big boned. The Vet suspected he may even have some Maine Coon in him.

He was a wonderful cat for 10 years and was just a big furry bundle of love. He didn't like men and would hide if a man was in the house. I suspect his last owner a man may have abused him some.

This will be our last anniversary. As much as I was hoping to see how long he would last I can tell he is suffering (he has a large tumor on his liver and it's so big he can barely eat) so I am spending my last few days with him until I take him back to the vet one last time. I could probably spend thousands of dollars to see if his life could be prolonged but it's just not sensible. He was about 2 years when I found him and I know one day I'll bring a new pet into the home - perhaps I can give another cat (or maybe dog) a chance of happiness.

So Happy Anniversary Abbott

What a beautiful boy...

He's had very good innings with you. It makes me sad to hear they're almost over...

I'm remembering all the cats we've had, and their passings, and it makes me a little teary. The same with your story.

Safe passage to him...

Be good to yourself too, my dear LynneSin...

I am facing the same dilemma with my Rascal. He was a throw away dog that found his way to my vet in New Mexico. He is 17, blind, ill tempered, and senile. Thank goodness he is missing some teeth otherwise his bite might really do some harm. He is all boy and a dog's dog. I work hard to keep weight on him these days and he chokes on his food. Cold weather slows him up a lot. I think it is kinder to put him down now rather than later. Valentine, his kennel mate will miss him terribly. I call him the old Jewish man and she is the dumb blond. Mom asked me why and I told her that when I took him out to potty, he was worse than an old Jewish man with his newspaper trying to take a daily constitutional.

I am taking him up to my brother's farm. We have a spot for him right next to where brother's beloved Sky rests. He has been spoiled plenty and he has had a good life.

Abbot looks like he has been well loved.

And you are lucky, too, for having found him! He looks like a real kool kat. Happy Birthday to the boy.
