What time was today's sunset?

Last edited Fri Dec 7, 2012, 11:17 PM - Edit history (1)

The next solstice in 2012 comes on December 21 and marks an unofficial beginning for winter in the Northern Hemisphere. For this hemisphere, this upcoming solstice brings the shortest day and longest night of the year. And yet the earliest sunsets for middle latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere are happening around now.

It seems paradoxical. At middle latitudes in the U.S. – and throughout the Northern Hemisphere – the earliest sunsets of the year come about two weeks before the solstice and the shortest day of the year.

On the plus side, for most of us, sunsets will start occurring later beginning tomorrow, if only by a few seconds. The days will continue getting shorter until the solstice but that's because sunrises are continuing to occur later.

So post your sunset time. And light a candle.

eg Santa Lucia Dec. 13th (lucia is Latin for light)

our sunset is 4:34 for about the next week.
But the sunrises keep getting later for a while yet.

We will pick up two whole minutes by the solstice! It's not much but we'll take what we can get.

I wish the sunset would keep getting earlier until the solstice. It just feels more cozy and winter-like to have an early sunset.

As it is, the sun starts setting later before December 21, , but the sunrise gets later until early January.

That is PST. Got the time from the Wunderground site for this location.

Interesting post. I hadn't really noticed this before. Thanks for the heads up.
