The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAn open letter to Salmonchantentevening,
My Dear Friend,
Man I so hope you read this!
I have been at DU for awhile, first as a healing balm for the Bush years, then as an enjoyable habit!
When my little brother died, your LOLCats became my healing balm, I cry as I'm typing this, I'm scared to see this era gone.
I don't talk much, as you can tell from my low post count, but I'm here everyday, sometimes 2 or 3 times, and there are certain people
that I hold dear in my heart on this board, and you are one of them, Please don't leave?
Let me tell you about my brothers death.
4 1/2 yrs. ago, we had an earthquake, here in Wells Nev., big brother went over to little Brothers apartment in the Bay area to tell him in person that mom was okay, a little damage at the ranch but no major damage.
There was no answer at the door, big brother got the super to open it up. My beautiful baby brother was dead.
He grew up with Grand Mal Epilepsy, a week prior, he had a seizure fell and hit is head, and it killed him, he laid there for 6 days, before anybody found him. The guilt and the sadness were/are overwhelming.
That time in my life is a blur, so much to do and feel, but your constituency and heartfelt humor and kindness is the one thing I had to start my life again.
I guess it's too late now, I should have told you this a long time ago, but like I said, I am extremely shy on the internet.
I wish with every fiber of my being that I would have read the comments that fateful Sunday, when you were attacked, I know I would have come to your defense.
Your choice to leave is yours and yours alone, and I am sincerely sorry for that behavior of one ninny for taking you away from me.
I don't mean to sound so selfish, but I have come to love my Sunday mornings with you in them, it's like someone dying all over again.
Be kind to yourself always, and please know that there is someone in rural Nevada that is sending you blessings and love.
In Light,
sage

(31,952 posts)I'm so sorry about your brother, Sagetea. I know that shock all too well. When Dad passed, it was right in front of my brother and Mom. I sat on the stairs and watched in stunned silence as the paramedics did what they could, until it became clear that nothing could be done.
We go through life never knowing how much what we say and do impacts the lives of others. I do now. Thank you, and all of DU.
The hundreds of posts asking me to stay, the private messages I've been sent, and the posts from friends on FB already had me considering my actions hasty to say the least. I apologize for the pain they have caused you to live over again. I know I couldn't have guessed the particulars, but it looks like I have underestimated what a weekly dose of silly and aww can do for people.
What happened Sunday was, as many have guessed, a tipping point. Several things, many not DU-related, have been going on, and this hit me hard, and pushed all the pieces over at once. If I could have foreseen the reaction, I would have never posted that pic. I use Sundays here as more than just a thank you note, it's a weekly cleaning of the head, and time saying hello to people I truly love, yourself so very included.
Thank you for the letter. Shall we say Sunday around 6 AM? OK 9, you're in Nevada.
Love Always

(1,555 posts)It's difficult to relive one of the worst times in your life and thank you for sharing.
I see in the thread that Salmon will be posting our weekly laughs and awwws again. With this great news, a lot of Sunday mornings will be more enjoyable.
Please DUers - let's stop the viciousness towards each other. It's not worth getting tombstoned (unless that's your ultimate goal) or being the impetus for others to leave this corner of the internets.

(132 posts)I am so glad that you are staying. I have been on DU for years, but don't post much as you can see. I usually feel that what I would say has already been said-so I don't post just to see my thoughts on the computer.
I really enjoy Lol Cats and the fact that you reply to many of the posts.
Please keep up the good work!

(172 posts)I know that I am late to the party. I have been a lurker since the dark days of the shurb, but this brouhaha has pulled me from my slumber. I don't know you Salmon, I have yet to be blessed with your wisdom (not said facetiously). That is to my detriment truly. All I know is that rarely have I seen such an outpouring of love and acceptance for someone who is just a faceless person on the other end of a keyboard. If nothing else, this incident brings home to me that the sterile environment of the internet has flesh and blood people on the other end. I never want to think that I will treat anybody with less respect then I would do if they were in front of me. If you can't say it to the person in your face then you should not say it at all. What I realize is that this medium allows a lot of people to vent like a virtual version of road rage. The fact that so many wanted to circle their wagons around you, that they wanted to profess their love to you, that you made such a difference in the lives of so many others that you will never meet except with words like this, tells me soooo much about you. This incident brought me out of lurkerdom as it has so many others. There is so much love here. I come here daily for news and I appreciate the intelligent conversation but I have never contributed until now. You radiate love and acceptance, never accept less in your life. As you have seen, you will get nothing less then what you put in! You make me want to participate which I will do from now on. This is your gift! (or maybe your curse if I just babble stupidly).

(31,952 posts)And thank you so much. I'm overwhelmed by this all, and your kind post has me failing to find the right words besides thanking you.
Glad that you chose to join the conversations here, there are incredibly passionate people here and I hope they welcome you they way they have embraced my silly self.

(53,410 posts)It's pretty amazing to see how many people are avid fans of SCE. I'm glad to be one of them.
Your letter made me cry. I lost my brother many years ago. I know how it affects your entire life forever afterwards.

(441 posts)It is late, and my brain has grown far too fuzzy and tired to come up with an eloquent comment on what you've said, here.
But, thank you, sagetea for writing your open letter to SalmonChantedEvening.
Like you, I am often here, 2 or 3 times per day. I don't always have time to post, so my post count is also very low. In spite of my low post count, this community means a very great deal to me. DU is often the lifeline which keeps me sane.
I know if we had lost Salmon's LOL Cats, my Sundays would have had a huge empty hole. Yes, I can check out icanhazcheeseburger on my own, but I deeply love Salmon's comments and replies to all of the DUers who check in and comment on his threads. His kind and humorous replies, and the interaction between all of us who do reply to his posts is the stuff of something very precious: a sense of community. And not just any community, but a very caring one.
Your heartfelt letter seems to have halted a terrible loss. I know nothing can make up for the loss of our loved ones (my father died 5 years ago, on 12/7/07), but I am glad you were able to make Salmon know that his effort on each Sunday to bring smiles, laughs, and awwwws to this community really are deeply appreciated, and that those cute pics and crazy cats of his help to heal and cheer a lot of hearts. If Salmon had left us, it would have created a huge tear in the social fabric that is DU. The times we are living in leave us all in need of connection with people who would 'have our back' when we need it.
Bless you, sagetea, for speaking up. I have no doubt it was not easy to speak up.
Huge hugs to both you and Salmon
And a big shout-out and reach-around for all the DUers who have joined in with support on this issue.
